other railway. They have buiit
their homes along the line, which
they have been enjoying, with
their families. But a portion of
the engineers, those who by lack of
long experience, or of natural
ability have not yet risen to the
higher position and range of wages,
want the pay of all engineers lev
eled up to one scale. The demand
is preposterous. It would cripple
all ambition. Suppose all farm
laborers should combine and say '
that every man accepted upon the
urua at all, sh-juld have the same '
price per day or month as till otlier
laborers. All farmers know that
many men are worth double, yes,
four times as much, This princi
ple of paying extra for ability,
length of service, faithfulness, etc.,
