tents will be taken at the door to
defray expenses.

Two brakemen, one on the Leb
anon and one on the Overland
train, met at the depot Monday
evening and pecame engaged in a
fight, it is said over rival claims to
to thetaifectionsof two Albanygirls.
The fight was not strictly accord
ing to rules, but the combatants
managed to batter one another up
in very good style. Blood flowed
freely , from the overland man's
nose, who is said to have ben bad
ly done up by the Lebanon brake
man. They were bundled aboard
their respective trains in time to
avoid arrest by the police, who ar
rived on the scene at the finish of
the fight. The young ladies who
had gone to the depor to meet the
brakemen were frightened witness
es of the slugging"match.
Artistic Entertainment.
A few days since a very large
audience in Corvallis greeted Mr.
C. C. Hogue in the role of a car
toonist. For over two hours he
kept the house in delight with the
creations oi his brush. He draws
as rapidly as the famous Th : Nast,
and owing to the more humorous
character of his sketches manv
enjoyed Mr. llogue's efforts more
than that of Mr.Xast. His local por
traits of a lew of the leading men
of Corvallis, although done with a
few strokes of t'ae brush, were
recognized before half done and
were greeted with cneers. A)r.
Hogue has consented to repeat his
entertainment at the opera house
in this citv on Friday night, March
2'M. for the benefit of the ladies
aid society. He will try to draw
nortraits of some of Albany's
notables in addition to the regular

THE CITY COUNCIL.
A Lengthy Session -Gas Works Ordinance
Various Improvements.
Regular session of the city coun
cil was held last night, all officers
and members being present.
The committee on streets and
public property recommended that
the matter of building a sidewalk
from Fourth street to Ninth be
postponed.
In reference to the opening of
Ninth street it was ordered that no
further action be taken until an
ordinance is prepared.
The petition of Jas. Cherry and
others for a eewer was reported
favorably by the committee, and
the report was adopted.
The committee on- ordinances
asked for further time to report on
the question of closing the saloons
of the city at 11 r. m.
A petition of L. Flinn and others
for the privilege of a 12 foot side
walk on each side of First street
from Ferry to Ellsworth streets,
also a remonstrance on the same
subject, was read and an ordinance
granting the right to construct a 12
I toot sidewalk from Washington to
I Ellsworth streets was ordered to be
drafted,

A resotution was adopted mak
ing it obligatory upon all property
owners in the city within two
blocks of a sewer t connect their
cess-pools with the same.

Francisco Gas Co, proposing to
erect gas woiki in this city was
read and placed on file.

at the intersection of Washington
and Fourth and Ellsworth and j

Mr. G. A. Dyson, of Brownsville
who is one of a mining company,
which has recently made sume
rich discoveries on the Calapooia,

specimens of gold bearing quartz
and some free gold taken from the
quartz which required no mining
expert to attest to its richnes. The
quartz is of a semi-decomposed
character, and small particles of
free gold an readily be seen with
out the aid of a glass, thickly im
bedded in the surface of the rock.
The mine, which is a well de
fined ledge 7a feet wide, is owned
by Messrs G. A. Dyson, N. B.
Standish and J. W. Moore, of
Brownsville, and M. H. Williams
a miner of Idaho. Four claims
have been located upon the ledge,
and a tunnel 92 feet in length has
been extended iato the mountain.
About 20 feet more, Mr. Dyson
states, will be required to rjach
the ledge proper at a depth of 85
feet. The mine is situated six
miles from a wagon road, and a
trail has been cut into the ledge
The owners of the mine are con
fident of success, and the speci
mens which have been taken out
certainly indicates that gold is
there in no inconsiderable quanti
ties, the only question beine a
method of getting it out in paving
quantities.

The young man known as O'Brien,
who committed the burglary in the

J. II. Burkhart received yester
day direct from the mills in the
East two tons of the best paper
and card board that has ever been
brought to Albany. In buying in
such large quantities he gets it at
about one-third the price charged
for small lots. This saving he

of low prices. He has also re
ceived some new type of latest de
signs, and from the class of work
that is now being turned out at his
olliee, he is second to no job office
in Oregon, and his prices are as

her friends hojw to see her well
soon. Dr. Osborn, of Brownsville,
renders medical assistance. Mrs.
Pybum's father, Mr. Marell, of
Gervais made them a visit last
week.
