The special convocation of
Bayley Royal Arch Chapter No. 8,
held in the Masonic hall in this
city on the 8th inst., was to those
who attended a meeting of more
than ordinary interest. A full
class, consisting of the following
gentlemen, received the royal arch
degree : J. L. Cowan, J. W. Cusick,
and Geo. W. Smith, of Lebanon.
The work was rendered in such a
way as to reflect great credit upon
those who had the matter in
charge. The crowning feature of
the affair, however, was the ban
quet at the Revere house restaur
ant, given in honor of the families

The new emperop of Germany,
Frederick the Third, was born at
Potsdam, October 18, 1831 : married
iu 1858 the eldest daughter of
Queen Victoria: entered the army

turning column of the Prussians,

defeat of the Austrians at Sadowa
in 18(6. During the France-Prussian
war he led the third army of
200,000 men and 500 guns; won

the war. He was present at Sedau I
in August, 1870. He 13 an able!
soldier, an amiable and accom- j
I plished man, but he is doomed '

venerable sire to the grave. Under
his present condition of health he
is not much better than a dying
man, and will probadly be actively
represented iu the government of
Germany by his eldest son, Prince
William of Prussia.
tktic Bit of Landscape Gardening.
The gruunds of J. A. Gross, at
the depot hotel, are being convert
ed into the most artistic bit of
landscape gardening on the line of
the O. & C. railroad, and will help
to make the Albany depot the most
attractive one in Oregon. The long
walks constructed up and down
the track have been surmounted
by neatly painted low railings,
and the intervening grounds are
artistically . planted with choice
flowers and evergreens. A wagon
load of evergreens were taken to
the depot yesterday from the gar
den of J. F. Backensto for this
purpose.
The building is to be supplied
with electric lights, which will
add to its attractiveness. These
improvements will serve as a good
advertisement for Albany to the
many people going and coming on
on the O. & 0. road, and certain
ly reflect much credit upon mine
