WEATHER PREDICTIONS.
Perhaps no other old habit of
human beings stick to them with
the persistency as does the belief
in the commonplace weather signs
faYiara Thov ViAVf hAAfl
handed down to us hy ages 01
quotations, and still influence and
control us, no matter how much
we may plume ourselves on being
free from superstitious observances.
The real reason for this will be
found in the fact that very many of
those old sayings really embody
scientific truths, more tersely and
understanding put than , is done
by the later scientific expressions.
The Popular Science
Monthly
thinks that the persistent survival
of weather-lore in these days of
intellectual emancipation is not at i
all remarkable when we consider
the extent to which the vulgar j
sayings embody real truths. A
few years ago Messrs. Abercromby :
and Marriott embarked on an ex
tremely interesting inquiry with a
J i
view to determine, by actual com-
parison, how far the popular prov-
' t i f
erbs express relations, sequences,
which the results of meteorological I
science show to be real. The in
vestigation proved that something
like a hundred of the more popu
lar sayings are, under ordinary
conditions, trustworthy. Such
being the case, we need not be
surprised that simple country folk
prefer familiar couplets to all the

words demanded by science stand
no chance against four. But it is
unfortunate that, along with the
limited number of folk-say'ns
founded on truth, there has snr- i

on the grossest error.
These latter i
have borrowed

Two newspaper carriers, aged
about 15 respectively, at Houston,
Texas, got into a quarrel over a
girl, and one drew art old pistol
from his pdeket and shot the other
dead. Thus the presence of that
old pistol caused the loss of a
widowed mother's only support,
and brands a boy of 15 with the
stigma of murderer, for if the
ready pistol had not been at hand
cooler thoughts would have inter
vened before personal harm was
accomplished.
