HEAVY DAMAGE SI IT.
The Oregon Pacific Sues Contractor Hunt
for $150,000 Damages.
The Oregon Pacific railroad com
pany through their attorneys in
this city began suit in the circuit
court last evening against Con
tractor G. W. Hunt to recover dam
ages to the amount of $150,000.
The complaint alleges that dam
ages to this amount have been sus
tained by the non-performance of
his contract on the extension of
the road eastward from this city.
Mr. Hunt is not in the city at
present, being engaged on his
Umatilla branch, but he is ex
pected home in a few days.
Women's Kclief Corps.
The following statistical intorma
tion obtained from the notes from
the president's annual report shows
that the growth of the department
during the past year has been
steady : The corps in Oregon now
numbers fifteen, with a member
si up of 310. $214.65 has been dis
pensed in charity during the past
vear. $79.50 haf been turned over
to posts Balance on hand in the j
treasury $328.32, which is the re- i
lief fund of the corps. On hand
for current expenses $167.25. The
national department now numbers
514 corps, with a membership of
49,590 members, of these lo,904
have been added during the year,
1S87. $74.70 has been expended
on charity.

Electric 1 ight Machinery Damaged.
The djuauio aud regulator tor
N. II. Allen's incandescent electric
lights was received yesterday by
boat. It was in a sorry condition,
having been in the Union Pacific
smash-up. The machines cost
about $2400, and are probably a
total los?, which will fad upon
the railroad company. The ma
chinery will be replaced without a
delay of about three weeks. In the
meantime the arc or street lights,
will be put up and set going. Poles
for this purpose are now being
placed in position.

Salem, Feb. 24. Dr. H.Carpen
ter died at 3 :20 morning, aged 61.
Dr. Carpenter was the founder of
the medical department of the Wil
lammette university, and was for
years dean and professor of sur
gery. He was the first superin
tendent of the state insane asjlum
resigning in 1886. He will be bur
ied Sunday afternoon.
Utility as Charged.
Portlaxd, Feb. 24. The jury in
the case of Wm. R. Daly, returned
a verdict this afternoon of guilty as
charged in the indictment.
Daily was charged with assault
with intent to commit rape upon
the person of Mrs. Ade Druet.

extend the west side railroad from
Corvallis to Drain station in Dou-

a fertile agricultural coutry to bet
ter transportation facilities, also to
a valuable lumber district. The
petition is in circulation from Cor
vallis to Drain and will be
