The
First Day's Session of their Animal
Reunion- Over 200 Delegates.
The opening day of the annual
encampment of the Grand Army
of the Republic and the Women's
Relief Corps for the department of
Oregon, which convened in this
city yesterday, could not have been
more appropriately chosen than on
Washington's birthday. The busi
ness houses of the city were gen
erally decorated with flags, bunt
ing, streamers, and mottoes of
welcome for the visitors. About
200 delegates were present from
different portions of the state,
besides many other visitors.
The officers of the department
held their council of administra
tion at 10 a. m., and at 1 p. ai. be
gan the
regular business session.
Gen. M. L. Olmstead, depart
ment commander, promptly called
the department to order at the
hour of meeting. Telegrams were
read from Post Commanders
Wright and Lamb regretting ina
bility to be present. Gen. Olm
stead delivered an able and inter
esting address which was listened
to with closest attention, and was
received with approbation and
applause.
The report of the commander
showed the department of Oregon
in a prosperous condition, with 42
posts and a membership of 1309.
The assistant general's report also
exhibited growth and healthy con
dition. The quartermaster's report
placed the finances in a good con
ditioti and evinced careful manage
ment. The report of the depart
ment inspector exhibited the work
of the posts throughout the depart
ment was very generally in a
satisfactory condition . The reports
were referred to special committees.
A recess was taken to prepare a
roster of encampment.

Bcnnewltz Captured.
Bill Groves, of Dallas, and Mar
shal Bohanon, of Independance,
captured Bennewitz, the escaped
Dutch jail bird, on Roy CBverly's
place, about half way between Sa
lem and Dallas, last Saturday.
They inquired at Byerlev's house
if he had seen Bennewitz j and hav
ing received a negative answer,
started away, and shortly discover
ed fresh tracks. Following them
up, they captured the little Dutch
man in the brush, and took him to
Dallas, where they again lodged
him in the "jail" he had twice so
easily escaped from. If the au
thorities want to keep him there
this time they will have to tie him
don to his bed, and have the
county commissioners take turn
about sitting on him. When cap
tured Bennewitz had gotten rid of
the shackle which mast at . first
have hampered his progress. He
said he picked the lock and left it
on a stump about a mile from Dal
las, but this may be doubted. It
is thought Bennewitz when cap
tured was on his way to Salem to
make application for quarters in a
jail that would exercise his ingen
uity just a trifle in getting out of.

distinction of being the only col
ored graduate from the Cincinnati
college of music, as well as the
only colored professor of music
ever in the Cincinnati public
schools. As a student, he was
earnest and painstaking, having a
mark of nine in a maximum of
ten. For two years Professor Mc
Kanlass studied in Leipsic, giving
his attention to violin, theory,
harmony and composition. The
professor's traveling represents
sixteen years ot his life, and dur
ing that time he has visited Eng
land, France and Australia. His
musical specialties are new and
original, his feat of playing two
cornets at once, and also that of
playing on eight different instrn
ments at one and the same time,
being original with him. Taken
all in all, the professor is certainly
a musical genius, one who com
bines a natural ear for music with
many vears of hard study. His
banjo playing is of such high order
that he is justly called the king
banjoist, while his handling of the
violin has earned him the title of
the "Negro Ole Bull." His col
ored specialty company has been
organized for three years, and
gives a first-class entertainment.
