council was held last night.
The committee on ordinances re
ported an amendment to the ordi
nance preventing the - spread of
contagious diseases, which was
adopted.
The city printing was awarded
to Stites & Nutting at ten cents per
square.
The special committee to whom
was referred the matter of locating
a sewer in the third ward recom
mended that the sewer be built on
Railroad street, which report was
adonted.
The pest house recently con
structed was accepted by the city,
and the board of health were in
structed to rent it.
W. R. Bilyeu presented a peti
tion from Engine Co. No. 1, asking
that the city purchase for the use
of the company a new steamer, the
same to be an improved Clapp &
Jones engine.
Petition of citizens asking for the
removal of the wash house of San
YVa, was read and referred to the
committee on health and police.

A Tramp in Attempting to Board the Train
Has One Leg Cnt Off.
A man named Jones, who had
evidently been riding on the break
beam, in attempting to board the
south bound passenger train Mon
day night as it was leaving Harris-'
burg fell beneath the car. His lett
leg was run over and crushed, be
ing nearly severed from his body.
The train passed on without any
one knowing what haxl happened,
but some young men heard the
man's cm s and came to his assist
ance, lie was given medical aid j
and kept over night at Harrisburg,
and yesterday morning was taken j
to Portland.
The unfortunate man, although
he had the appearance of a tramp,
had money enough to pay his pass
age to Portland, where he said he
wanted to be taken for treatment.
