The calamities of the Chinese
nation seem to increase on the
ratio of the decrease of their
national strength and industry.
Another break has occurred in the
Yellow river of such dimension
and causing such an overflow that
repair and reclamation seem almost
impossible.
It is said that the tires of the
country, not including the forest
lires, burnt up property valued at
$130,000,0 )0. Statistics show this
to be the largest loss ever experi
enced in one year in tne United
States, excepting the two years
that witnessed respectively the
Chicago and the Boston fires.
'Mexico is said to be negotiating
a loan from Germany of $52,000,
000 upwn the strength of friendship
with that nation, but the proba
bilities are that Germany has a
secret inkling that Mexico will
make a very fair country for
colonization purposes, and a $52,
000,000 mortgage on the country
will be of considerable advantage
in that direction.
The decision of Judge Ii. S.
Bean, in the circuit court at Cor
vallis, sustaining the demurrer
that throws the M. E. Church
South vs. the State Agricultural
college out of court, wiil be sus
tained by the people, and it is to
be hoped will settle the case and
the trouble from the Agricultural
college which has hung over it
like an incubus tor some time.
A kailkoad engineer upon a line
of railroad entering the state of
Alabama was arrested for not
f iking out. a license under tl e
laws of the state. He appealed
the case to the United States
supreme court, on the plea that
the national constitution gives the
power to congress to regulate in
terstate commerce. The supreme
ourt decides that the law is bind
ins and sustains the statute of the
state of Alabama.
"Bringing coals to Newcastle"
is illustrated with a vengeance, it
the following from a Scotch agri
cultural paper is true : "An enor
mous quantity of potatoes are just
now being shipped from the Clyde
to the United States, owing to the
failure of the potato crop in Amer
ica. Some idea of the quantity
mav be gathered from the fact that
the State of Georgia was unable to
take the full amount placed on the
quav for her, and that the anchor
liner Furnessia takes 1,200 tons
to-day. The freight, we under
stand, is 17s (id, but 20s is now
quoted. If, as is expected, the
duty on potatoes is removed when
the rearrangement of the new
tariffs is made by the American
government, the result will be that
there will be a iko:-- regular and
probably greater business done
between this coimUy and Amer
ica. The import mce of tHs to
the agriculturist is very great."
Certainly the great American re
public ought to raise "spuds"
enough to feed her people, and
American farmers will not relish
having the duty taken off trom
potatoes, so that Scotch farmers
can take in the profits and leave
them out. m the cold.
Too much cannot be said upon
jthe importance of maintaining the
- public schools; they form the
foundation of our national exist
ence and the glorious principles of
liberty that distinguishes our gov
ernment from all others. One of
j the dangers that threatens the
public school system is the inces
sant and untiring efforts on the
part of zealous advocates of re
ligious beliefs to have some recog
nition of religion introduced by
special text books or religious in
structions. The New York Sun
says: "In a country like this,
where there is no state church,
and where not even Christianity is
recognized as a state religion, it
seems to be impossible to logically
and justly enforce any sort of re
ligious teaching in schools sup
ported by general taxation. If,
therefore, the different churches
regard such teaching as an impera
tive necessity apparently the only
course for them to take is to set up
schools of their own. But then
would come up among Protestants
also the question which has been
raised by the Catholics, as to
whether the state can rightly com
pel people to contribute to the
support of schools of whose in
struction they disapprove ; and the
permanance of the whole public
school svstem would be endan
gered. It is a problem of tremen
dous difficult-, and the more it is
discussed the greater its difficulty
appears." lio.vever much that
difficulty may loom up it must be
met, for as before observed enthu
siasts will constantly push the
matter to the front, and the only
solution would seem to be to en
tirely droj the subject of religious
teaching in the public schools.
Their safety demands such a
course.
