THE PACIFIC RAILWAYS.
The president's message to eon
gres upon the subject of the obliga
tions of the Pacific railroads to the
government, does not seem to in
struct in any practical way, the
legislators how to cut the gordian
knot of that complicated affair.
The democratic Cincinnati En
quirer thinks that perhaps the
most significant appointment in the
v.-hole list is that of Mr. Outhwaite
to head the committee on Pacific
railroads. That seems to rnan an
indorsement of his bill of the last
congress to give the roads an ex
tension of time in which to pay
their obligations to the government
a measure openly approved by
Senator Thurman, the fiercest and
ablest antagonist of Pacific railroad
mismanagement that congress has
known.
Probably that paper is about
right in its conjectures, and per
haps it is just as well to give them
further time, as undoubtedly they
will in the end be given the entire
debt. Not so, however, if they
were individuals instead of corporations.
WORK CREATES GENIUS.
EDITORIAL JS'OTES.
The wonderful growth of rail
roads in this country is one of the
most striking examples of our
growth and progress that we have.
It is said that the miles of rail
road constructed in 1887 footed up
nearly 12,000, and there is a strong
probability that this rate of devel
opment will be maintained this
year. There are many Mho affect
to be ieve that railroad construc
tion has advanced too rapidly in
the United States, but they are the
sime pessimists who declared in
1883 that the country could not for
twenty years to come adequately
support the roads then in exist
ence. Since then we have added
:0,000 miles to our system, and, as
has already been observed, the
prospects are that in the next four
years we shall supplement them
with 50,000 more miles. Perhaps
no more active civilizer can be
found than these same railroads.
It brings people together and
makes every man in a measure a
cosmopolite.
It is said that the bones of the
leg of Gen. Dan. Sickles lost at Get
tysburg are preserved in a glass
case in the national medical mus
rum at Washington. Apparently
Dan has had a Key to the future,
for he can go and see how his bare
bones will look.
Farmers t Merchants'
Most of people think that all of
the great men of the world have
became so because they originally
possessed special aptitude for the
work they performed.
There perhaps may be a slight
foundation for such a belief, but it
is too slight to be accepted as an
axiom of human ondition. In
vestigation will show that hard
continuous work has given nearly
all of the wonderful human pro
ductions, and that special proclivi
ties in any direction seldom
amounts to any results unless ac
companied with the closest appli
cation. In studying up this subject the
Magazine of American History
finds some very interesting facts :
It is said that the habits contracted
by genius assist the action of the
mind. Cicero tells us how his elo
quence caught inspiration from
constant study of the Latin and
Grecian poetry. Pompey never
undertook any considerable enter
prise without contracting his
thoughts upon the character o
Achiiles in the first Iliad although
Jie acknowledged that the nr..
