Bella The Grain Crop.
Early yesterday morning it be
gan snowing, and by daylight the
ground was covered to the depth
of about an inch. It snowed stead
ily nearly all day, and at this writ
ing, 1 a. m., it is four inches deep.
Yesterday afternoon the jingle of
sleigh bell were heard' in every di
rection, and gav cutters and the
more primitive style of Oregon im
provieed sleighs were flitting about
all over the - city.- Manv farmers
took advantage of the day to come
to town in sleighs.
Wheat growers from different
sections of the county agree that
the fall.crop has been damaged to
some extent by the freezing weath
er. Oats, however, has suffered
more than wheat. The ground is
! frozen to the depth of a foot or
I more, and in some instances where
workmen have dug down to repair
j water pipes it was found to be
! frozen as deep as sixteen indies,

About six or eight weeks ago a
dancing teacher, who gave his
name as l'rof. Milliken, came to
this city and organized a dancing
school, agreeing to give a term of
tour
lessons for 2.50. By his
polite way and pie isant manner he
succeeded in organizing j, larue
class and in collecting money in
advance for all tickets issued. His
iirst term was taught in a success
ful way, dances being given every
Wednesday evening of each week,
and he Fucceeded in gaining the
entire confidence of the majority

hesitate when he gave out tlie an
nouncement that lie would teach a
second term, in going clown in
their pockets and digging up their
$2.50 pieces for tickets, to the
amount of about $75 or $100, which
he put. in his pocket and gave the
first lesson, since which time be
has not been seen or heard of. At
the same time he organized a class
for children, charging $1 per month,
which he treated in the same
manner. He not only leaves his
classes to mourn his absence, but
also a number of outstanding
small bills, which are liable to
stand for some time to come. It is
also learned that the professor had
I organized classes on the same plan

in Eugene, tialsev, Harnsbur
: and Albany, and that he even went
i so far as to borrow what money he
! could of his friends in the latter
place, which he failed to return.
However, from what can be
learned of his past record, these
are not the only place he has vic
timized, he having played the
same dodge in Walla Walla, W.
T., and other places last winter.
His home is in Oakland, Cahfor-
j nia. and his parents are well-to-do
people, and why he should resort
to such low tricks for procuring
money is beyond comprehension.
