One of our leading army engin
eers has brought before the engin
eer classes of late an experiment
of so startling a nature in its it -cepttou
as to promise wonderful
results. It is a monster magnet
made of two Rodman suns, which
are connected, at ' the breech:
Around the wagnet thus formed is
wound about twenty miles of sub
marine cable. The cable is some
that has been used in the torpedo
service. It is wound and fastened
in a substantial manner, making a
permanent magnet. When electri
city i9 applied some strange re
sult take place. For an instance,
a bar of railroad iron thirty feet
long, if placed in the open cannon's
mouth, cannot be drawn out by as
many men as can grasp it.
Another instance of the strength
of this big magnet was illustrated
recently with a 350 pound cannon
on the negative side. On revers
ing the electrical current it fell
from its position, but was attracted
to the opposite cannon and clung
to its side. The positive current
was then reserved alternately with
the nagative, and the heavy cannon
bait playedjietween the two can
oon ijke a tack' between the poles
of V toy' 'magnet'."' Before many
days there will be a public exhib
ition of this remarkable attractive
magnet.

The great project of building a
railway across Siberia, now leing
pushed to completion by the Rus
sian Government, strongly hold
out the idea that in the very near
future a great iron belt from this,
side of the world will meet it half
way, and travel bv laud from the
New World to the Old will have
been accomplished. Great rail
way corporations are now seriously
looking into this, as it seems, stu
pendous project, but in reality not
PeoDle believe. The countrv that
wil. necessarily have to be crossed
in Western British Columbia and
Central Alaska is far from being
the frigid zone that many believe
it to be. The line would undoubt
edly in its course north strike-the
headwaters ot the Yukon river,
then Keep down that mighty
stream to within perhaps a bun
dread miles of the coast, at or near
Vnlatn. alicrp it wrmlil leavi th
river and running nearly west
would terminate at Cape Prince of
Wales, within about fifty statute
miles or the Siberian coast. Very
little difficulty, except, perhaps, in
crossing the ranges at the head
waters of the Yukon, would be
apprehended from deep snows in
winter. The climate along the
Yukon is dry and bnt very little
snow falls there from eighteen
inches to perhaps two feet in depth.
Extreme cold, from 70 to 80 degrees
below zero, only prevails during
about, two months of midwinter,
and this would be the greatest
drawback to winter travel. Im
mense forests skirt the route nearly
to the coast, and about midway
down the Yukon are probably the
greatest coal banks in the world.
Branch lines would tap all the
coast settlements and the rich
mineral sections of the interior.
(.With such a fair country before
them it will be wonderful, indeed,
in this enlightened and progressive
age, if work has not commenced,
on such a line within a very short
time.

Scylla is a rockv cape on the
west coast of south Italy, jutting
out boldly into the sea so'hs to form
a small peninsula just at the north
ern entrance to the Siraits ef Mess
ina. The rock is about 200 feet
high, and much hollowed out below
by the action of the waves. Nav
igation at this -place was looked
upon by the ancients as attended
witlf immense danger. This rock,
according to Homeric legend, was
the abode of a hideous monster,
eucom passed with dosand wolves.
Charybdis is a celebrated whirl
pool in the Straits of Messina,
ilomer places it immediately op
posite to Scylla. If it was so, "it
has changed its situation since his
days. The myth connected with it
is, that under a large fig tree, which
grew out of the rock opposite Scyl
la, dwelt the monster Charybdis,
who thrice every day sucked down
the water of the sea and thiice
threw it up again. Ships which
tried in navigating to avoid Scylla
were often wrecked on Charybdis.
