Uncle Sam's domains are said
to contain one-half of all the rail
roads of the world.
The supposition is that the next
time the Hussiati czar shows his
uind,it will he full and clubs
trumps.
Congressman Glover,' of Mis
souri, wants to hfe governor of that
state, and says lie has no ulterior
object in view. However, he is
careful to not commit himself as to
what he may develop after elec
tion. The :ar stove is seemingly in
collusion with the weather, for
with the thermometer down to
thirty degrees below, it is impossi
ble to endure with the new steam
heating apparatus or kindred ap
pliances that are being put on trial
to supplant the cremating stove. .
The United States impiovement
association ha3 been organized in
Massachusetts. It might be well
enough for that societv to make Ta
careful study of "letting well
enough alone" before it attempts
to very materially improve our
venerable Uncle Sam's domanis.
The osculatory meeting of human
lips has been under discussion by
the press of Philadelphia, and its
value estimated, and still the
country survives and young people
will continue to investigate. Irish
of the Alta, says in reference to
the value of a kiss: "It depends
entirely upon the kisser and the
kissee and the motive that impels
the exchange. We have seen
tuis amusement or pastime in
dulged in when it was better worth
.seeing than a horse race. No gen
eral mle can be established and no
fixed value placed on it."
. The Chronicle truthfully says:
"If the charge can be proved that
the captain of the lifeboat station
near Waterford, Ireland, refused
to go to the assistance of the men
on the wrecked Alfred D. Snow,
because the sea was too high, he
ought to be severely punished. It
is to the credit of the life-saving
service, both here and abroad,
that cases of cowardice like this
are almost unknown." No man
should accept a josition that lie is
not willing to fill, and face all the
dangers connected therewith, and
certainly the man who accepts the
place of captain of a life-saving
station is aware of what dangers
he must face in performing his
duties. There is something more
thafn mere cowardice in refusing to
do his duty it is akin to mal
feasance in office.
The matter of putting thoughts
and hastily considered expressions
into black and white, in the shape
of t-pistolatory correspondence is
pretty well illustrated in the results
of the Gampbell-Arbuckle suit in
New York. The heavy verdict in
f.ivur of Miss Campbell, in her
breach of promise suit against old
ir. Arbuckle, shows the danger
liiat a wealthy man incurs by
w i-iting ardent love letters to a
. .man who is shrewd enough to
"v-'Tve all these missives. With-
ii i his mass of epistolary litera
: it is doubtful whether the
u ititT would have won her case.
, ik ?;will do very well but to put
i- pords in a shape to be pre-:-x,-d
for the future contempla
n of trial juries is quite another
:ier. Under this same consid
i Jn will probably come Mr.
-m's phonograph. Undoubt
these same shrewd women
ije setting up their phonograph

.safety will be absolute silence

e peculiar power that party
ince exerts over public, men
j.retty well shown in the case
tator Hearst of California. It
d that just before his depart
r the east, he promised the
Horticultural Society that he
I endeivor to further their
wishes in matters of national legis
lation. Does he think to redeem
his promise by aiding to destroy
the raisin interest, and the green
fruit interest, and the citrus inter
est, as he most certainly will do if
he helps to carry out the presi
dent's ideas of tariff reduction?
Does he fancy that he will suit ais
constituents by breaking down
growing and nourishing industries
in California? Yet it is reported
when the message was read in the
senate Mr. Hearst said: "Well,
I haven't read the message yet , and
I did not listen attentively to it;
but it sems to be popular with our
side, and I guess it will be all
right." This peculiar senatorial
expression of opinion was suspect
ed of being a travesty of Mr.
Hearst's actual remarks, but sub
sequent events make it more than
probable that he was accurately re
ported. He certainly seems to
think that his highest allegiance is
due to " our side," instead of to
the state of California, and that
if Cleveland's views are popular
with the democratic party it does
not matter much if putting them
into effect would ruin his consti
tuents. In direct contradiction to
this Mr. Barton, a leading Califor
nia democrat and an extensive
raisin maker and vine grower, says :
" Free trade for California means
the destruction of all our important
industries. Placing raisins, for ex
ample, on the free list, will ruin
the raisin industry of my state.
Wool-growing is another important
industry with us, and I fear that if
Cleveland's policy prevails the wine
imposts will be next attacked."
The present prospects are that
the Washington territory council
will re-inact the Women Suffrage
bill. Thereat some of the leading
politicians are fearfully exercised,
and want Governor Semple to use
his veto iower. The mill of the
gods grinds slow, but it grinds up
improgreBsive leading politicians in
the end, as will eventually be found.
The Colfax Knights of Pythias
went to Garfield to institute a new
lodge. They left their parapher
nalia boxed up upon the sidewalk,
and when it was wanted it could
not be found. Probably some. per
sona desired to dress up for once in
their lives".
Denis Kearney, the distinguish
ed sand lot orator of San Francis-,
co, tried to make a sensation in
Washington, by appearing at the
president's reception in a cardigan
jacket, tweed trousers mid checked
shirt. He did not create the at
tention that he desired.
