Sew Orleans Picayune. .
A well-known artist gave me
some curious information the other
day regarding the sources trom
which the colors one finds in a
paint- box are derived. Every
quarter of the glohe is ransacker!
for the materials-- anin" a', vegetableO?.
and mineral employed in their
manufacture. Prom the cochineal
insect are obtained the gorgeous
carmine, as well as the crimson,
scarlet ami purple lakes, beput is
the iukv fluid discharged bv the
cuttle fish, to render the water
opaoue for ifs own concealment
when attacked. Indian yellow is
from the urine of the camel Ivory
black and bone black are' made out
ot ivory chips.
Iheexouisite lJru si-n blue is
trot bv fusing horses' hoofs an I
other retuse animal matter withim
pure potassium carbonate. It was
discovered by an accident. In the
vegetable kiDgdom are included
the lakes, derived from the cnar
coal of the vine stalk. Lamblack
i9 soot from certain resinous sub
stancis. From the madder plant,
wlpch grows iu Hindustan, is man
ufactured Turkey red. Gamboge
comes from the yellow sap of a tree,
which the natives of S'am. catch in
cocoanut shells. Raw sienna is the
natural earth from the neighbor
hood of Sienna, Italy. When burn
ed it is burned sirona. Raw umber
is an earth from Uinbria, audisako
burned.
To these vegetable pigments may
probably be added Indian ink,
which is said To be made from
burned camphor. The Chinese,
who alone tan produce it, will not
reveal the secret of its composition.
Mastic -the base of the varnish so
called -is from the gum of the
mastic tiee, indigenous to the Gre
cian archipelago. Bistre is the
soot of wood ashes. Of real ultra
marine but little is found in the
market. It is obtained from the
precious lapis lazuli and commands
a fabulous price. Ciiiuese white is
zinc. Scarlet is the iodide ot mer
cwry. and cinnabar, or natives ver
million is fr-m quicksilver ore.
Luckily for the health ot small
children, as my friend the artist
remarked, the water colors in the
cheap boxes usually bought for
them have little or no relation
chemically to 'he real pigment they
are intended to counterfeit.

The Number of Engines in Europe
and Ameriea.
F ur-fifths of the engines now
working in the world have been
constructed durinjr the lastiweuty
five years. Fiance owns 49.590
stationary or locomotive boilers,
7090 'ocomotives and 1850 boats'
'oilers: Germany has 50.000 boilers,
10.000 locomotives ami 1700 ships'
boilers; Austria, 12,000 boilers and
2800 locomotives.
The force equivalent to the work
ing steam engines represents: In
the United States 7, 500.000 horse
power, in England 7,000,000, in
Germany 4.500.000. in Fi-mce -3,-000,000.
and in Austria 1.500,000.
In these riguivs :ne mo'.ive power
of the locomotives is not included,
whose number in all the world
amounts to 105.000 representing a
total of o,000,000 horse power.
Adding this amount to the other
powers, we obtain a total of 40,000,
000 ho:se power.
A steam horse power is equal to
three actual horses power, and a
living horse is equal to seven men.
The steam engines of the world
represen', therefore, approximately
the work of 1,000,000,000 men,, or
more than double the working
population of the earth, whose total
population amounts to 1,455,923,
000 inhabitants. Steam has ac
cordingly trebled man's working
power enabling him to economize
his physical strength while attend
ins to his intellectual develop
ment. K ii lining Fixtures for 1888.
