Trust Stocks Weakening.
Mr, J. P. Morgan is reported as
being worried over tbe persistence
of w ist has been termed the "rich
mens' panic,” of the lack of confi
dence in some if not all the “ Mor-
ganeered” enterprises or specula
tions. The fact is that the great
amount of what Mr, Morgan him
self called “ undigested securities’’
nrc not regarded with entire confi
dence, even if to be admitted that
Mr. Morgan has been a very success
ful broker or promoter. “ Fiat”
paper in unlimited quantities, large
ly representing fictious and inflated
values, cannot be passed off indef
initely as desirable and safe “ secur
ities.”
The Philadelphia North American
remarks that “ the Morgan trusts
and other concerns similarly organ-
zed aro in a condition analogous to
that of a county which has issued
paper money far in excess o f its
ability to redeem and which has no
intention to make its paper good.
Nobody will take suoh money, and
the public declines to digest or even
to swallow trust
‘shinplasters.'
The bubble-chasers havo had their
droam of avarice, in which they saw
themselves _ wall awing in millions,
nnd then have awakened in a panic
to find their wealth only the stuff
that dreams are made of. All their
beautifully engraved ‘securities' in
excess of actual capital might as
well be counterfit Confederate scrip
so far as their ability to dispose of
it to the public for hard money is
concerned.”
But there is no apparent danger
of such a “ panic,” or period of ex
treme industrial deression, as oc
curred ten years ago. The country,
its legitimate business enterprises,
are in a prosperous condition, and
most people care but little about
the weakening or fall of the “ Mor-
ganeered” trusts, or the slump of
their “ undigested securities;”
