The 1002 season will bo thogriat-
est bicycle season ever known. The
finest equipped and most up-to-date

We want your trade, and we are
entitled to it, because we have
good goods, right prices, and can
serve you well. You don’t expect
anym ore, but you want that much,
don’t you.
Not far from where we first came
upon the river, down stream, and
to the right, wns an opening of
several acres in the woods where
another young bachelor rancher
had entered a “ claim,” and began
home making. I knew him very
well.
He was said to have a col
lege diploma, and also to have a
fine young woman; a “schoolmis
tress,” by the way, “ engaged” to
go into the wilderness with him,
“ in the sweet by and bv,” which
may be true or false, but don’t for
get the “ college ranch,” for we
shall pass that way again ere long,
at shorter range.

another gate and see before us an

looking down upon the buildings,
and the river, and the small clear
ing whero a five years residence of
the man in possession had not yet
arrived at the dignity of growing

It was the
claim of Soloman Shiftless, a good
man for days works for other peo
ple, but a mighty poor one to
work for Soloman. He had not
succeeded in “ raising” anything
there but children of whom, if I
remember the count right, there
were six beside Soloman, Jr., and
the dog.

would turn his wire edge against
it, and get on with such speed, as
often to be lost to view, when I
would call a halt, until I came up.
He was a sure enough “ child of the
wilderness.” One who let his moth
er cut the fire wood and bring it in;
make and repair tbe brtish fence
around a diminuative garden spot,
and plant and hoe what few vege
tables tbe ranch produced.
He
was his father’ s own boy, even as
“ young Jerry” was “old Jerry’s own
boy,” in Dickens’ “ Talc of Two
Cities.”
Both were “ Juniors” in
every possible sense of the word,
and in them, when one knew the
father, one knew the family, or at
least it’s elder scion.
When ‘Sol’ emerged from the
cabin with my valise, he was
followed by his mother, and all the
family, who lined up on the bank.
That cabin was the post office, and
as I had often been there before,
the Inly of the house sent her
voice over and asked if I was “not
going to call,” but I bad to make
my excuse as we wore in haste to

night, promising to see them all
many times before we went away.
Besides the baby in her arms, the

At one time I knew all their names
and ages, but somehow like many
other important things in my car
reer, they are forgotten now, and
I could not name one of them to
save my neck, and that woman,—
really I always felt sorry for
her—anchored in the woods, as she

for other people, and Sol Jr., in
the woods with his dog and gun; a
veritable young Rip Van Winkle,

years, for the benefit of the fam
ily.
But be this said in faVor of 8ol-
omnn Jr: he liked all the small

helped take care of them, and
amuse them, when at home. He
wouldn't vnrk, but as he never
studied the game laws, his gun
kept their table well supplied with
venison, elk meat, and wild fowls
of every eatable variety.
Every
thing in the woods that walked or
flew, wns his if he couid get it,
and he even had two bear skins
nailed up on their “ shack” barn.
His conversation was like unto him.
He had a few funny anti-profane
slang words, but I never heard Sol
swear or indulge in obscene talk
or tell a story ’twer better not told.
That is a whole lot in his favor, ahd
when in the woods and in the lead,
he was all ears and eyes, and had a
footstep as silent as an Indian’s on
the warpath.
No matter how
tired ho was when he came in lrom
a hunt, his gun was no sooner in
the rack, than he had the baby in
his arms, (there was always a baby
in that cabin) while he complacent
ly allowed his mothor to chop the
wood aud bring it in.
For the
last three or four years no doubt
his gun had done about as much
toward tbe “ family feed” ns his
father’s outside work, and auy
man who would have put the “ game
warden” after him, in my judge
ment, should have double the pun
ishment allotted the boy,
who
must have something to eat, as
well as the loved little oues at
home, who perhaps were some
times hungry.
We had another mile to make,
and young “Sol” on his return in.

the sly chap knew there was “ txvo-
