The Copper Queen arrived from Rogue River, Sunday bringing up some fine Chinooks and also a fe w barrels of salt salmon. K. Y. Kruse returned from the city last week, and will immediately commence work at Ferndale on two large mud scows, 50x200 feet, which are to be used in connection with a dredger in San Francisco bay. The river steamer Cruiser arrived from Gray’s Harbor last week. She is owned by L. J. Simpson; and is to run on the Marshfield-Empire route in place of the Blanco, which will be used in connection with the dredger. Petition. That crime of bribery, elector al and legislative, is on the inorease in this country, we have an accumula­ tion of painfuiy convincing evidence. One deep of shame answereth unto another— Rhodo Island to Deleware Albany to Harrisburg, St. Louis to New York. Men whose right hande are full of bribes sit in high places of government, go about the streets with heads erect, are in good repute in society and often iu the church. Yet they are confessedly making the very pillars of our public life rot­ ten. Popular elections they are turning into merchandise and ren­ dering the so-called “ will of the people” as expressed at the polls a thing for corruptioniets to sneer at even while they manipulate their purchas ed voters.—The Nation. A story comes from Washington that a Chicago woman has been using the mails in an improper way. Postmaster-General Payne ordered that her letters be excluded from the mails, whereupon the fair Cni- cagoau wrote asking him for a per­ sonal hearing, so her side of the case could be presented. “ I feel sure,” she wrote, “that if I could get a chance to look straight into your beautiful brown eyes you would bear my story." Mr. Payne by way of a joke, wrote on the blank leaf of the letter: “ Respectfully re­ ferred to the Secretary of War for advice." and sent it over to Mr. Root.
