As I have s id, you see this curi
ous “ fish” is transparent. You can
look right through it.
You don’t
see any sign of a heart, or stomach
or veins, or bones, for the very
good reason, there are none; noth
ing but a quivering mass of jelly,
which assumes different forms as it
floats about, or contracts itself and
shoots away through the water like
an arrow.
What it feeds on, and
you see nothing which looks like a
mouth, or how it lives, no one
knows, or if they do, they have
kept very still about it, and yet
this thing, a nothing on land, and
so curiously alive in water, and
which, as it ioabs, you can look
through and >ee the sand beyond;
even as old Scrooge looked through
the ghost of Marley and saw the
buttons on tbe back of his coat;
this thing I sny, has a sort of mind
or instinct, is conscious of danger
and makes haste to get itself out of
the way.
It baa always stirred a
grewsome feeling in me. It is so
vapory and spirit-like, 'twere better
called a “ water sprite;” a sembleuce
of something you cannot grasp,
which ns you see, when I seek to
touch it with my cane, makes that
spot vacant iD an instant and re
appears somewhere else.
Ah. it is
no fish, except it lives only in the
salt sea water, only has shape in
water, nor yet a “ sprite.”
It is
only an interrogation point.
A
“ what is it?” and so it floats away.
And still another queer beauty
of the sea, before we close our ram
ble, and retreat from the incoming
tide.
We find three of them in a
nook, covered by the great Pacific’ s
waves, during hall the hours of
the day, i. e. the twenty-four,
which complete the earth’s revo
lution. These are the sea anemone.
