A number of the boys intend
leaving this week for San Podro,
Cal., where they have been prom
ised employment on the government
works.
Following are the officers of the
militia company, lately organized in
Marshfield: H. L. Burleson, lap-
tain; C. A. Albrecht, 1st lieut.; M. C.
Maguire, 2d lieut.
The bar has been rough for sev
eral days. On Monday, when the
Empire crossed in, it was breaking
badly, and though the steamer was
flying light, she took some water on
deck.
George Quigley, formerly of New
port, returned InHt week from Ne
vada City, Cal. George thinks Coos
bay is good enough for him, and he
will probably spend the balance of
his days among his old acquaint
ances.
The number of pupils enrolled at
tho Marshfield public school last
week was 300, which includes 24
pay scholars.
Tho mail continues to arrive ou
excellent time; iu fact wc never had
us good mail sorvice in tho winter
time as wo enjoy at present.
At a meeting of the Coos Buy
Camp, No. 196, W. O. W., held on
Saturday night, the following offi
cers were elected: A. Abbott, C. C.;
C. L. Bonebrake, Adv. L .; W. U.
Douglas, banker; Israel Lanilo,
clerk; Clias. Cavanaugh, escort; W.
E. Richards, watchman; Frank Sac-
chi, sentry; J. H. Milner, manager.
Great schools of pilchards have
been iu the bay for months past and
they seemed to thrive and get fat
until the freshet of laht week filled
the bay with muddy water. This
did not ngree with these Halt water
fish and consequently they died by
the thousands, the mudflats at cer
tain points beiug covered with them.
Seagulls and other fish-eating birds
have been having a thanksgiving
feast ever since tho freshet.
Carl Palmer, the little grandson of
Mrs. Calvin Palmer, had a narrow
escape from drowning
Sunday
afternoon. He was riding a slab in
tho slough back of tho steam laun
dry and fell in. It was high tide,
and the water was about eight feet
deep in the slough at the time. Dr.
MeCormae heard his cries for assist
ance, and quickly ropairod to the
scene. He divested himself of his
coat and vest, preparatory to plung
ing in, but Cavl managed to get close
to shore by this time, and he was
liftod out, completely exhausted.
