BOMBARDMENT
BEGAN TODAY.
Washington, July 11.— A cable
gram from General Shafter was re
ceived nt the war department over
night stating that the actual bom
bardment of Santiago would begin
today. It appears that the affair of
Sunday was only a preliminary ar
tillery skirmish.
The following was received at
10:30 a. in.:
“The navy has promised after the
bombardment to get in close to the
harbor with some of their light-
draft boats. If the bombardment
tomorrow (today) is not quickly
conclusive they will make the at
tempt. As soon ns Henry’s rein
forcements arrive we will surround
the town nnd can knock it to pieces
with our light guns.”
Twenty-three minutes later the
following was received:
“ My plans for tomorrow are to
keep up the bombardment of the
trenches and city and complete the
investment on the northwest by the
troops which have just arrived at
Siboney, one regiment of which has
reached me.”
Soon after noon the following was
roceived:
“ I regret to report that Captain
Rowell, second officer, was killed late
yesterday afternoon."

The rest o f the happening is best told i:i
the mother's own words. She said :
“ On the 28th o f Sept. 1896, while iu the
bloom of health Beatrice was suddenly and
severely afflicted with spinal meningitis.
Strong and vigorous before, in five weeks she
became feeble and suffered from a paralytic
stroke which twisted her head back te the side
and made it impossible for her to move a limb.
Her speech however was not affected. W e
called in our family doctor, one of the most
experienced aud successful practitioners in
the city. He considered the case a very grave
one.
“ The child's body was bandaged to keep
her in position. Soon it was seen that other
means must be adopted.
Little Beatrice,
much against her will, was housed up in a
plaster paris jaoket which she wore for sev
eral months.
