amid the rejoicing of the money
power. But wait It is rising from
the dead. It is bursting the tomb
and breaking the barriers of death
and will spoil the power of hell, and
ascend and sit down upon the
throne of its glory, and possess aud
enjoy its own again. Corporate
greed has pressed down upon the
brow of labor a crown of thorns,
and crucified it upon across of gold,
but it will rise from the dead and
live again.
W. J. Bryan, the Christian gen
tleman, the honest man, the Ameri
can patriot, the redeemer of labor,
the people’s candidate for the presi
dency of the United States, will be
elected by the people, will over
throw the combined forces of the
gold power, and restore to tho peo
ple their long lost rights. May
heaven bless and defend him, over
throw his enemies and help us all
to do our duty. We wnut no crown
of thorns nor cross of gold.

ous to preserve the rights they
liavo and anxious to gain new priv
ileges and greater power. It fol
lows from this that the ablest law
yers are always employed to serve
the greedy and strong. Whatever
lawyers may once have keen, they
are mere machines for getting
money, viewing life aud its duties
and responsibilities in exactly the
same way as the pawnbroker and
the trust promoter. Their talents
are for sale to the highest bidder,
and the corporation and syndicate
are the highest bidders. For a
stipulated fee the lawyer will either
seek to make the law constitutional
or unconstitutional, according to
the side which furnishes the fee.
He often goes even beyond this and
sells his talent as a common lobby
ist to promo* e the most iniquitous
schemes. Whatever the old books
may say about the honor of the
lawyer’s profession, and however
much falsehood our law lectures
may teach as to the high standard
whieh a lawyer ought to take, and
however much our lawyers may
deny the charge, the fact remains
that nearly all the ablest lawyers
place their talents in the market to
sell to the highest bidder, and the
one who does not, or who espouses
an unpopular cause without an ex
orbitant fee and for any such foolish
whim as love of justice and fair
play, is considered a “ hairbrained
crauk” or a weak sentimentalist who
does no credit to the profession of

Several years ago a young girl in
the high school became infatuated
with the son of oue of the leading
professional men of San Francisco.
They were both too young to marry,

the girl was still in her 17th year she

custody of an old nurse, who de

surrendering to her forever the

that the old nurse has become
dissipated aud is living with her
daughter, now about 14 years of
age, among the lowest aud most
diessolute characters. Tho mother
has tried to better tho condition of
the old nurse but she only sinks the
deeper into the mire and is dragging
the child down with lior.
Some time ago the father made
an attempt to secure the guardian
ship of the child, but was unsuccess
ful, for he could not establish his
right to her custody. The mother
is undoubtedly entitled to the pos
session of her child, but if she pro
ceeds she will advertise her shame
to the public, break up her own
home snd lose the love und respect
of her other daughter.

several times attempted suicide
and for several months was an

Late Thursday, Nov. 4th, Otto
Krahu, a convict at the Oregon
state penitentiary, was shot and in
stantly killed by one of the guards
while mnkiug a desperate attempt
to escape. Krahn was committed
from Multnomah county in 1893 for
the crime of rape, l’lie guard who
shot him is Jay McCormick, a young
man well known iD Salem, and it
was the first day of his service at
the penitentiary. No inquest was
held over the remains of the convict
