Weak Men,
A Clash
in Kansas.
Kansas City, Aug. 4.— A npecial
to the Times from Topeka says:
The federal authorities and the
state of Kansas will clash. Lust
week a federal judge from Arkan
sas, Judge Williams, held court at
Manitau, Colo., and issued a sweep
ing injunction in behalf of the
Mutual Life Insurnuce Co., of
New York, restraining Insurance
Superintendent McNall from en
forcing the state laws regulating
insurance companies, and also
enjoining Attorney-General Boyle
or any other lawyer on behalf of
the state fiom bringing nny civil or
crimiunl suit against the cnmpauy.
It is believed that Governor Leedy
and the state administration pro
pose tocoutest.
Jtis claimed tonight that Gover
nor Leedy is preparing a circular
letter of great importance, which
he will send to the posecuting attor
neys o f the state, appealing to
their patriotism to uphold the crim
inal laws of Kansas against the
interference o f federal authorities.
To be brief, he wants them to pros
ecute every agent doing business in
Kansas for every insurance com
pany to whom a license has been
denied, or whose license is revoked.
Governor Leedy is quoted as say
ing:
“ I f Judge Williams or any other
federal judge seeks to restrain this
state from enforcing its criminal
laws, we will dispute his right to do I f needed by poor, tired mother«, over*

Stephen Russell Mallory is n sena

There is more
than a mere coincidence in the
similarity of names. The men nre
cousins. Senntor Mallory’s father
and Senator White’s mother were
brother and sister.
It is a little
curious that tho two senators should
represent states as far apart as it
is possible for them to be— one on
the Atlantic and the other on the
Pacific coast. The grandfather of
the two senators was one of the
earliest settlers of F’ lorida, while
their grand mol her was a Spanish
woman of fine stock, considerable
of a beauty, and remarkable con
stitution, retaining to her old age
all of her faculties.
Much of
Senator White's sturdiness comes
from his grandmother.
He was
not born iu Florida, for his father
ard mother crossed the plains in
1850, attracted to California by the
reports of newly discovered gold.
The senator was born iu San Fran

T be Mallorys, on

of politics reunite the families in
the senate.
