tbe Collegiate Institute hy the
ladies of the Methodist church, to
realize a fund to repaper and im
prove the interior of their church
building, was not as well patron
ized ns it deserved, but it was
nevertheless a success financially,
und a decidedly pleasuiable, refined
nud edifying occasion. Other ap
pointments iu town on the same
night reduced the attendance, bat
the audience was select and appre
ciative, and the program recherche
and unusually attractive.
The program was as follows:
Mixed quartet, Yachtiog Glee—
Mrs. L. H. Morgan, soprano, Misses
Uiidie Nosier nud Laurel Couway,
altos, A. A. Leach, tenor, J. S.
McEwen, bass; prayer by Rev. J.
L. Futrell; instrumental duet—
Misses Irene Lamb nud Mary Lee
Futrell; vocal solo, “ Tbe Breezes
Are Rocking the Roses to sleep” —
Mis. Nora A. Good; recitation, The
Old Methodist’s Testimony— Miss
Laurel Conwell; comic solo, “ He
Got It in the Same Old Place” — An
derson Lamb; instrumental trio,
“ Music Box” — Miss Keely and
pupils, Irene Lamb nnd Mary Lee
Futrell; vocal solo, “ Home, Sweet
Home and Mother’s Arms” — A. A.
Leach; recitation, “ Shadows on
the Blind” — Mrs. Dr. J. B. Moore;
instrumental solo, “ Ripples on the
Alabama"— Miss Marvin Lamb;
instrumental duet, by Missps Keely
and Irene Leueve; vocal solo, "No,
Thank You Tom ” — Mrs. Conwell;
recitation, “ The Famine” — Miss
Hnnna Keely; instrumental duet,
by Misses Marvin Lamb and Zetta
Messer.
These numbers were unusually
well rendered and heartily ap
plauded ns they deserved to be, and
displayed a marked advance in
taste, grade and culture in both lit
erary and musical selections. The
music was modern nud up-to-date,
and each selection was a gem and
creditably given.
Miss Martin
Lamb is a charming accompanist
on piano or organ, whose taste aud
technique immensely sustain the
vocalist if diffident or lacking inde
pendence, and in this instance went
far toward winning success.
After the program the throDg
took “ strawberries and cake” and
passed a social s. .son. The young
ladies were kept quite busy iu
receiving aud filliug orders, but
didu’t dally or miss many sales,
and thus augmented the fund for
chuich improvement considerably
