an “ nnnrchist” and dangerous agita

“ Bishop Potter indicts both ma

ing the ill-feeling and uneasiness
among the laboring classes. Ma
chinery is turning the workingmen
into idiots; aud, after picturing
gprapliienllythe work ho saw a you n g

bishop said: “ No wonder that ‘at
night-time he drank, gambled aud
fought.’ He had to; otherwise he
would go ‘mad.’ How many of us
would stand this and D o t cry out!
Not one of us but would ‘ become a
striker. Myself among the first!
As for the employer, he “ looks down
upon ‘liis men.’ ” “ He treats them as
if they had ‘no souls.’ ” He is con
stantly looking for new inventions
which will save money and throw
more men out of work. “The labor
ing men must make the capitalist
respect ‘their rights. Let them stand
on their feet ‘und use their voices,’ ”
thuB spoko Bishop Potter Monday
evening, and thus he concluded:
This association(the church associ-
action for the advancement of the
interest of labor) is looked upon as
a dangerous and revolutionary one,
because it tends to unite the church
with the laboring man iu his great
struggle. Say w hat they will against
it, hut I for one-announce that from
today on the church of God is with
the laborer.
That’s good— that’s coming hack
to the gospel as Jesus preached it.
Jesus was with the laborer, every
time, Let us hope that the pro
fessed churches of God will come to
this bishop’s standard, and speedily,
moreover. From the point of view
taken by the plutocratic civilization
of tile day, and expressed by almost
every New York newspaper, and by
too many ethers, however, Bishop
Potter, must now be reckoned a
dangerous man and a “ reckless agi
tator.” He is almost an “ anarchist.”
But how precious are such men
as Bishop Potter!

Pioseburg Review: The trouble
with these numerous witnesses who
are springing up like mushrooms
to give evidence favorable to Mur
derer Durrant, is that their testi
mony is contradictory. One swears
that he murdered the girls himself
for a paltry$700,acd another affirms
that he saw Rev. Gibson commit
the crime.
These little discrep
ancies mar the sensational effect of
their evidence very materially.
It is reported that during the
Jane campaign in Lane county
Rev. I. D. Driver was accnsed by
E. R. Skipworth, his oppeneut for
state senator, of being unable to
adhere to the truth in public dis
cussions. Feeling that be ought to
resent such an imputation, Bro.
Driver asked a friend what he
should do in such a case, to which
the latter replied, “ Quit lying.”
MES. M. E. 8ANOSTEB.
“ I ennnot do much,” said a little star,
“ T o make this dark world bright;
Mv silvery beam cannot pierce far
Into the gloom of night;
Yet I am a part of God's great plan.
And so I will do the best that I can.’ *
“ What can be the use,’ ’ said a fleecy cloud,
“ Of these few drops that I hold?
They will hardly bend he lily proud,
If caught in her chalice of gold;
But I, too, am a part of God’s great plan,
So my treasures 1*11 give as well as I caff.”
A ohild went merrily forth to play,
But a thought, like a silver thread,
Kent winding in and out all day
Through the happy golden head—
“ Mother said, ‘Darling, do nil that you can;
For you are a part of God’s great plan.’ ”
She knew no more than 1 lie twinkliirg star,
Or the cloud with its rain-cup full,
How, why, or for what all strange things
are—
E*he was only a ch ild at school;
But she thought, *’ *Tis u part of God’s
grunt plan
Thnt even I, should do all that I can.”
So she helped another child along
When the way was rough to nis feet,
And she sung from her heart a little song
That we all thought wundrou 3 sweet;
And her father—a weary, toil-worn man—
Said, “ I, too, will do the best that I can.”
