today to the power of states to tax
the franchises of corporations, such
as express, telegraph and railroad

involving the constitutionality of
the state law of 1HD2, one affecting
the Henderson Bridge and the
other the Adams Express Company,
were both decided favorably to the
state.

A
COUNTLRFEITER
CAUGHT.
The Police cf Syracuse Make an Important
Capture.
On Monday, the 15th, Harold
Marquises, of Utica, N. Y., Avas
arrested in Syracuse, N. Y., on a,
warrant sworn out by the Dr. Wil
liams' Medicine Co., charging him
with forgery. Ou the 15th of De
cember Marquisoe visited a photo-
engraver in Syracuse, saying he was
the representative of the Dr. Wil
liams’ Medicine Co., and arranged
for the making of a fu llsetof plates
for the direction sheets, labels, etc.,
of the famous Dr. Williams’ Pink
Pills for Pale People. News of this
reached the home office, nnd nt>"
time was lost in arranging for his
arrest when he should return for
the plates. He returned on the 15th
and was accordingly arrested and is
now in jail iu Syracuse awaiting
examination, which occurs on March
2d.
This nvrost proves to be an im
portant one. In addition to various
plunder, such as medical books,
typewriters, rugs, etc., found iu
Marqiiisee’s trunk when arrested,
the police also found coin both in
tho trunk nnd on his person; nnd
in a search of his apartments at
Utica found a complete outfit for
counterfeiting consisting of cruci
bles, hollows, nickel, lend, bismuth,
antimony, a small blacksmith forge,
a charcoal furuace, and several
plastcr-of-paris molds. The United
States marshals want him just as
Bonn us tho Dr. 'Wlllhnus* Medicine
Co. are through with him, and, no
doubt, he will be sentenced for a
long period.
Iu selecting Dr. Williams’ Pink
Pills for his counterfeiting opera
tions, he showed his knowledge of
the proprietory medicine business;
for these pills aro in such great
demand that they nre easily' sold at
any drug store in the United States.
Ilis scheme was to work the country
druggists and sell his imitations at
a discount of from 2 per cent to 5
per cent explaining tho reduced
price by the fact that lie had picked
them up in small lots and at a dis
count from dealers who were over
stocked. By working fast and mak
ing long jumps, he would hav®
secured many hundreds of dollars
i i n short time. The proprietors of
Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills are most
fortunate to have caught the rogue,
before he had fairly started, mid I V
have thus kept these spurious goods
out of the market.

A Valuable Fruit Paper.
As fruit is rapidly becoming the
leading industry of the northwest,
and ns this county can easily get to
front rank if tho farmers will only
take hold and push things, we have
mndo arrangements to do far more
than our share toward pushing the
county forward in this respect nnd
will do more if the farmers will show
the proper spirit of enterprise.
There is now published at Portia
not only the most valuable but the
only fruit paper of America which
admits no rending matter to its col
umns except that relating to fruits
— their culture, care, marketing, etc.,
presented in such a form by the
prominent fruit writers of the north
west nnd America that none can
read and study it w ithout becoming
proficient fruit growers.
