THE STEF.VES JURY A T HILLSBORO
AGREE ON A VERDICT.
Hillsboro, Deo 21.— At a late
hour last night, tbe jury in tbe
Lawyer Sleeves case for murder
bad not returned a verdict.
It
stood ten tor acquittal and two for
conviction.
Tbis morning at 10 o’clock, how
ever, tbe two jurors had capitulated
and a verdict of acouittal was re
turned to Judge McBride's court.
Lawyer Xenophon N. Steeves had
been convicted at Portland some
months ago as party to tbe murdei
of George Sayers, in September,
1894, in conjunction with one out
law, “ B anco” Kelly, whose attorney
he was, and was sentenced for a
term of 15 years in tbe 6tate pen
itentiary.
It was appealed and
he secured a change of venue and
a Dew trial, the result of which is
an acquittal.
A great amount of interest is
shown in Portland over the result
of the trial.
Mr. Steevjs’ friends
hnve stood by him from the first,
and in addition he is n member of
several different orders, the mem
bers of which also stood by him.
Estimates of the cost of the
Steeves trial to Multnomah county
range from $2500 to $4000.

kers bought up warrants to the
extent of $2500 at a lucrative dis
count. There were 95 witnesses,
most of them for the prosecution.
