Empire City, May 2.— Our right
hand has not forgotben her cunning
neither has our tongue clove to the
roof of our mouth, but we have
been silently watching develop
ments, and to say that we have
been amused is putting it very
mildly.
In the first place, that rotten old
hulk sailing under a worm eaten
standard bearing tbe motto “ Demo-
ltep,” but known, puticulnrly to the
voters of Coos county (too well
known, in fact, to have any influ
ence) as “fusionists,” thought to
blind the people once more by hold
ing their conventions to all appear
ances separately, yet, though “sei>-
erate in body yet united in spirit
serviug the devil.” when it came
to nominations, they had not mate
rial in their own ranks which they
dared place before the public, so
they borrowed enough Populists to
fill out tbe list On further inspec
tion the ranks still appeared so weak
that the bosses decided that it
would be necessary to unite nil
available forces against their com
mon enemy, the cause and promo
ters of reform. This resu.tod in a
called meeting of tho candidates at
Marshfield on the 25th ult
The
bosses bad a beautiful plan prepared
and it was reported that they had
succeeded, but it seems that a few
of tho candidates arc still iguorant
enough to think that their particu
lar party represents principle and
refused to withdraw from the field
and they hereby prevented a sec
ond mnrriago of tlie twain so lov
ingly united two years ago.
W e feel truly sorry for these few
misguided mortals who were honest
enough to stnud on wlint they be
lieved to be principle, yet are so
densely ignorant of their true posi
tion. Turpen says Smith requested
him to withdraw nnd offered him
»50 to do so. Turpen indignantly
refused.
Now “ Peelhead” pleads
poverty of the “ widder,” as though
public officers are created for tlie
sole purpose of keeping people ont
of tho poorhouse. But there isn’t
a “ ghost of a show” for any of them
to be elected, so let them go on
with their tricks. It floes not hurt
the Populists nnd seems to amuse
them.
