By the dispatches of Jan. 1th we
learn that the Cuban patriots are at
the present actually menacing the
city of Havana. Tho Spanish forces
have constantly retired before the
division's of Gomez's army until
they have been driven within the
fortifications of the capital, and the
patriot chief with his three divis

in from three lines upon the city.
The Spanish forces, officers and
men, seem almost panic-stricken,
and from all indications tho conflict
is nearing the end, with all the
chances in favor of the patriots. It
is to be hoped that in this finnl

It possesses some medical proper

Editor Up-River Department .—
I feel very sorry that I handed in
my essay on New Year’s for publi
cation last week, because it seemed
to mnke someone very angry, judg
ing from a very uugeutlemnuly and
ciuel assault made upon you by
someone in the Enterprise last
| week. I did not have anyone in
my mind nud was not intending to
apply my moral soliloquy to any
person, but the writer above men
tioned seems to tnke it nil to him
self. I f you will excuse me I will
stop writing for your vuluable
department, because this person
who took mntters to heart so much
might destroy himself for I see he
is very desperate, or he would not
place himself in the untruthful
position he has, by saying you were
on a “jag” when the steamer arrived
Christmas, for everyone in t o - -1
knows that was not so. This being
the case it puts our city boaid iu a
peculiar position, and as this writer
lias known Mr. E. Bender a num
ber of years, I am inclined to
believe the signing of “Town
Board” to those articles is a very
untruthful proceeding if not forg
ery, for Mr. Beuder is a gentleman
who is cp,usiderecl far above sucb
malicious falsehoods and I believe
the city trustees of Myrtle Point
would ueyer endorse such uncalled
for falsehoods.
