“ The Heart” is the title of ou
excellent paper lately published.
Not until wo read this instructive
treatise did we have the true con
ception of how wonderful is the
work of the human hart. Wo quote
by special permission of the author
the following from the preface:
“Very few people have ever given
the attention to their lienrts thnt
this important organ warrants.
This wonderful little machine ivliich
is not much larger than your hand,
and only about two and a half
inches thick, labors day aud niglit
without rest, performing such an
enormous amount of work ns to be
nlmost beyond belief. Physiologists
sny each pulsation or contraction of
the heart exerts 50 pounds of force,
which amounts to 3600 a minute,
116,000 an hour, and the incon
ceivable number of 5,184,000 in a
Bingle day!
Now, it is necessary
that all this vast amount of lnbor
should be done, nnd well done every
day. The lienlth will surely suffer
in consequence of the least failure
oil the pnrt of the heart to properly
perform its duties. When it is weak
or deranged it directly affects every
organ in the human body nnd they
are unable to perform their duties
from lack of blood and nerve force.
Thoso organs that are more inti
mately nssocinted with the heart are
usually first to feel tho effects when
it is irregular nud fails to perform
its proper functions.”
This treatise it very artistically
illustrated with colored plates, nnd,
although strictly scientific, is writ
ten in n popular language, making
it very interesting rending for nil.

April 29.— As we predicted, llm
wedding at I. T. Weekly’s on the
28th was a very pleasant gathering.
By count there were forty grown
persons in attendance, and on fur
ther count wo found fifty-three
little people present.
This shows
that Coos county is progressing on
social lines, and that our commun
ity is advancing iu population-adult
aud juvenile.
J. H. Minard, J, P., was the
officiating genius in the matrimo
nial alliance of Jeff Crosby ami
M iss Leona Weekly, and had o.
very impressive ceremony, owing
to which, in tendering congratula
tions to the bride and groom, one
young gentleman—who is himsel
seriously contemplating taking this
impoitant step in life—saluted
both the bride aud groom with a
kiss, aud further reached for the
groomsmnu,but failpd, and foigot to
extend the osculotaiy ceremonial
to the charming bndesmrid, for
which offense t-lie says she will
settle with him in the near future.
All the guests sat dowu to a
bountiful repast, which tho host
and friends bail previously pre
pared in abundance, and enough
was left for the charivari crowd at
night.
On Monday night a grand
hall was given ut Shiloh school- •.•>♦*
house, which ends the nuptial fes
tivities so fnr ns the happy couple
is concerned.
May they live long
nnd be happy.
