In general tobacco w ill be o f inferior
burning qu ality if it contains m ore
than 0.4 per cent o f chlorine and less
than 8.5 per cent potash. A s a result o f
investigations made at th« A labam a sta
tion and reported upon by A lex J. Bon-
duranty it waa found that while tobacco
from sandy soils contained on an aver
age only 0.29 per cent o f chlorine, that
from heavy soils contained 0.92 per cent
of chlorine, mid that tobacco from light
soils averaged 2.8 per cent potash, while
that from heavy soils averaged 2.4 i**r
cent. F rom these indications, to secure
the best burning quality, tobacco should
be grow n on light soils and not on heavy
clay soils.

We take this opportunity of informing
our subscribers that the new Commissioner
of Pensions has been appointed. He is an
old soldier, and wo believe that soldier»! and
their heirs will receive justice at his hands.
Wo do not anticipate that there will bo any
radical changes in the administration of
pension affairs under the new regime.
Wo would adviso, however, that U. S.
soldiers, sailors, and their heirs, take steps
to make application at 01100 , if they have
not already done so, in order to secure the
benefit o f tho early filing of their claims
in case thcro should be any future pension
legislation. »Such legislation is seldom
retroactive.
Therefore it is o f great im
portance that applications be filed in tho
department at the earliest possible date.
If U .S . soraiers, sailors or their widows,
children or parents, desire information in
regard to pension matters, they should
write to Tin: P ress C laim s C ompany , at
