h ib it from Salem , the cap ital o f
t i n far-o ff western state. T h is e x
h ibit, w hile sent h ere by the O re
gon laud com pany, nud p resu m ab ly
in the interest o f real estate, is of
the m ost cred itab le character. I t
com prises seven ty-five
d ifferen t
varieties o f wheat, t’no q u a lity o f
w hich it is sa fe to say cannot be
excelled in the world. T h e fru it
in d u stry, which is the lead in g one
o f the W illam ette vnlley, is re p re
sented by a sn p erj^ i collection o f
ap p les and p e a r s w hich, lik e most
all t h e ’products o f O regon, w h ere
the clim ate is mild and the sea- >u
o f gTowth p ro p o rtio n ately long,
a re sujterior in size and flavor to
the s a m e \ a i ieties raised in any
other cou ntry.
P u t what is the most su rp risin g
to ouc un acq uaii ted with the soil
and clim ate o f O regon is the is-
p la y o f dried prunes, which are
sim p ly u n ap p roach able in p^int o f
