is rumored that they are looking

is too late.
Isaac Carter who lives near Dan

some newspapers that he wished to
read, and he kindled a small fire.
A fter reading a short time he went
to bed, but got up and examined the
fire and supposed it was all out and
weut to bed again. A fter a short
sleep he awoke and found one c ud

Parker builds the railroad and lan 1-
ing and furnishes the roiling stock,
Mr. Taylor makes all the other im
provements at his own personal ex
pense. Mr. Taylor commenced the
construction of the railroad June
10, aud the woik has been prose
cuted with vigor since that time.
The track is now about two miles
in leugtn, and will require an ex
tension of another mile to reach
the eastern boundary of the timber.
Ih e railroad runs, for its entire
length, through the centre o f a

valley flows a stream of the purest

i.; !: .d which has been designed
... M. .-os Parker and Tay lor, and
i-. the first of its kind, is peculiarly
adapted to this locality. From the
soft ;ie.:ty nature o f the ground on
which the track is built, a track
h. i 1 on ordiu try railroad ties would
sink and shift a great deal, and re
quire a ouisid -rabh1 expenditure
from time to time to keep it in re
pair; by thp p.escut mode of con
struction this difficulty is entirely
obviated.
The
road has been
thoroughly te.-ted by hauling loads
of Iumbei of 3000 feet aud upwards
over it, and has proved in every re
spect an unqualified success. The
inland terminus of the road has a
landing on each sid.j where the
logs are rolled on to the trucks.
The line from high water mark to
tho i harf on tho Coquilie river, a
distance of 250 feet, is built on
trestles. Tho wharf i» built well
out in deep water and tho largest
vessels entering the river can lay
alongside. The boom at landing
lias a capacity o f 200,000 feet, and
is built with a sufficient strength
to withstand the test o f freshet and
storm. The towing from Parker's
mill will 1)0 done by the Katie
Cook. The hauling on tho track
so far, has been done by horses,
but ere long a locomotive will take
their place, and it i3 expected she
