—On the 26th ult. a boy eight years
of age, by the name of Triplet, is sup
posed to have been drowned in Rogue
River, at what is known as Cooper’s.
—The ladies of Ashland, Jackson
county, have defeated a petition for a
liquor license.
—They have two potatoes at Eugene
City that weigh respectively seven and
seven-and-a half pounds—of the blue
kidney variety. A Mr.Goodchild, of
Lane county, has had his fourth crop
of peas.
— Pork-packers are doing a big busi
ness in Portland.
—There are 98 civil, and 28 crimi
nal cases ou the docket of Multnomah
county for the present term of the Cir
cuit Court, including four murder
cases.
—The first locomotive and tender for
the East side railroad have arrived at
Portland, and two more will be shipped
from Philadelphia on Monday next.
Track-laying is progressing rapidly.
—Two barrels of Oregoa flour, ob
tained by Vice President Colfax, on his
recent visit here, passed through Sacra
mento last week for the East.
— Two gentlemen from Portland
have discovered mining claims on Myr
tle creek, Douglas county, from which
they have taken as high as $65 a day
with a pan. One pan yielded $10.
— Frank Vaughn, indicted by the
Grand Jury of Clackamas county for
the murder of Alexander Larkin last
May, was acquitted. The attorneys for
the prosecution were A. C Gibbs, and
Johnson and McCown ; to» the defenso,
Lansing Stout and S. Huelat.
— Miss Dix has donated to the State
Insane Asylum at East Portland a fine

—Col. W. M. King, one of Oregon’s
earliest settlers, died at kis residence in
Portland last Monday.
—The Willamette is up and boats
have commenced running as far as Cor
vallis. The warehouses along the river
are plethoric with produce.
— A dispatch from Canyonville to
the Herald dated 4th inst says : About
eight o’clock this morning, as Mr. Eli
Durbin was coming through the Canyon
with his six horse team, and on a heavy

agable and jumped off the grade, injur
ing Mr. Durbin so seriously that he
died four hours after the accident.
The grade was very narrow aud the
road crooked. Mr. Durbin was a man
esteemed and beloved by all who knew
him.
— W. G. Scosrgins challenges the
State. He will run Jack Miner against
any two horses for $1,000 a side, either
a single mile; two in three; three in
five; two mile heat and repeat; o ra
single dash of four miles. In running
heat races he will let the other horses
change about, one run while the other
is resting. The Herald says Joseph
Knott has accepted the challenge, and
will run his horse, Vajlandigham,
against Jack Miner on the East Port
land track, in six weeks, for from $1,~
000 to $2,000.
— Mr. 3Iallory will immediately pro
ceed to erect a handsome brick hotel on
the site of the old Capital.
—The Herald learns that on Friday
last Robert Fryer, of Clatsop county,
was struck by an alder limb while roll

— A man named McNeil, at work in
