H u r r a h ! — Hon. J. S. Smith, our “ BRICK” POMEROY. A couplo of weeks ago we published an item, on the authority of one of the Sau Francisco papers, stating that ••Brick" would be in California this week on an extended trip through the Paciflo States and Territories, and sug gested that steps be taken by the De mocracy of Polk to ievite this brave defender of Democracy and working- man’s friend to address the people of this region at Dallas on bis tour through Oregon. Pursuant to the suggestion a large meeting of the Democracy of •‘Old Pdk" took place at the Court House lad Monday afternoon, ar.d ap pointed i committee to invite and escort (in case of acceptance) our redoubtable champion to our oharmiDg little burg. Since the meeting took pluce another issue of the Democrat has come to hand in which we learn that he will not start west until August or September- How- ever, let the committee invite him forthwith, (we havo no doubt of his acceptance), and let preparations be made to give him such a reception as will make his soul glad and do honor to ourselves. Let Polk county be the first to invite, the first to do him honor, and the last to forsake him or the prin- ciples we mutually hold dear. If we cannot give him as grand a reception as some of the older and more thickly settled communities, we can at least give him a hearty welcome and our best. co rrespondence . B d en a V ista , July 7th, 1869. E ditor T i m es :— By reference to the so-called Democratic Press, published by the would-be Democratic disorganiz e s B. B., of Salem, I see another at tempt is being made by that egotistical old ‘‘puff" to bring contempt upon the Democratic party and its most consistent adherents. All ‘ tho^e .Democrats throughout Oregon, sod indeed the na tion, that have stood firmly to the Dem ocratic rack, “hay or no hay," in times that tried men’s souls are denounced as disorganizes and not fit representatives of the party. “Brick" Pomeroy, the workingman's benefactor, is stigmatized as a blackguard. The editor of the Portland Herald is branded with the heinous crime ot being a working man — a nun who by his ability, his honesty and his courage has curved for himself a niche in the hcartof every true Dem- ocrat in Oregon. The Hon. Benjamin Hayden is sought to be brought into ridicule by calling him the “dirty Ben. Hayden,” and such other vile epithets as the imaginative brain of the self- important B. B. can devise.
