sea, and (2) th e idea of using a hook
instead of (or in addition to) th e w eight,
so as to catch in the bottom. The Eng- .
lish word anchor is p ractically tho same
as the L atin aneora and the G reek nng-
knra, m eaning " t h a t w hich has a n a n ­
g le ,” from th e root ank, bent.
The earliest anchors m ade on the
hook principle probably only had one
fluke instead of two. In tho "S ussex
Archmil. Coll. ” there is an illu stra tio n
of w h at has been surm ised to be an
anchor m ade out of tho n a tu ra l forked
branch of a tree. I t w as found w ith an
anoieut B ritish canoo a t B urphum , S us­
sex. T here is in th e B ritish m useum an
interesting leaden anchor w ith tw o
flukes bearing a Greek inscription. Its
date is about 5013. 6. and it w as found
off th e coast of Cyreno.
T he invention of tho anchor w ith tw o
flukes is a ttrib u te d by P ausnnius to
Midas, by P lin y to Eupalam as, and by
Strabo to A naeharsis. D iodorus Siculus
states th a t the first anchors w ere wood­
en tubes filled w ith lead, w hile another
classical w rite r says th a t before th e in ­
troduction of taotal anchors lum ps of
stoue w ith a hole th rough the m iddle
for the attach m en t of th e cable were
unload ?”
