William Lightfoot Visscher in The
Woman’# Home Companion tells this
characteristic .story of tho Hon. Isaac
Parker, famous ns tho tcirible judge nt
Fort Smith. Ark., who probably sen
tenced tuoro men to be executed than
any othor judge that ever lived. Thia
whs pot, however, because he was so
nnrolentingly severe, but beeanso fie
hod the hardest and most numerous lot
of criminals to deul with that ever
camo within the jurisdiction of such
an official. One day when there was an
unusually large hatch of culprits to be
sentenced the judge looked compassion
ately over his spectacles at one young
scamp nnd said:
“ In consideration of tho youth and
inexperience of this prisoner I shall let
, him off with a fine of $50"—
Before tho judge had done speaking
the very fresh young man coolly stretch
ed his right leg and ran his hand into
his tronsers’ pocket on tho side, remark
ing nonchalantly as he did so:
“ That’s all hnnky, judge. I’ve got
that mnpb right here in my jeans."
"And one year in tho penitentiary,”
continued tho jndge- Then, looking ovey
nt the epnvict in a quizzicnl sort of
way, ho added. “ Do yon happen to have
’ that jn your jeans?”
