A terrible accident occurred nhout
ten o’clock Sunday morning January
2lst, 1600, at the home of Andrew Hart-
ley on Maple creek, Douglas county
about six miles southeast of Florence,
by which Arthur, tlie four year old eon
of Mr Hartley, lost his life instantly.
Tlie boy was playing around while hie
fattier was at work on a hillside sawing
a log. Just as tlie saw cut through, tlie
boy climbed up on the log, when it
started to roll throwing him to tlie
ground below and passing over Iiis head
stopped across his breaut. Mr Hartley
dug away the earth and took tlie boy
out from underneath tliu log ns quickly

weight of tlie log, some fifteen inches in
diameter and twelve feet long, having
caused instant death.
