It is ourious, to nie wonderful, how
well do?« understand people. They
seem at a glance o: very soon thereafter
to decide in their minds whether or not
It would be safe to assail one who en
tera their ownor’e promises, says Lip
pincott’a Magazine. My own opinion la
that evory one of them, big or little, of
high or low degree, would liko to bito
every stranger that he sees. Thoir love
for their iccater makes them jealous or
makes them pretend to bo jealous of
everybody who approaches them, and
they debnto momentarily whether or not
a comer is afraid of thorn. If he is not,
they either extend a friendly salute,
which always is deceitful, or assume to
bo indifferent lx he is, they give him
a bite, more or less deep, then slink
away from possible consequences.
For years and years I have followed
tho rule, when visiting a person resid
ing out of town, unless I know positive
ly that he keeps no dog of any size, to
halt at the gate, raise a halloo and
await not only my host’s invita
tion, but his approaoh and his ao-
companiment into his houke. I could
not toll tho number of times wherein I
have been barked at furiously from the
inside by dogs whose owners declared
that In idl their lives they had never
dono such a thing before to a man of
gen tool appearance.
Tho oouns6ls and admonitions bestow
ed upon me might have excited some
gratitudo if they had not been wholly
useless. I have been asked so many
tim e s that it makes me almost Blok to
h a v e the question repeated, “ Why don’t
you just go along without noticing
su c h th in g s , not being or at least pre
tending not to be afraid? Not one dog
in 10,000 w ill try to bite a gentleman
u n le s s he is provoked or sees that he it
being avoided. "
A prominent German actcr, relates
Albert L. Vandam in The Illustrated
London News, had fulfilled half of hia
“ starring” engagement in the capital
of a grand duchy, and aa yet no recog
nition of his talents had been forthcom
ing in the shape of a decoration. Dis
gusted, the player announced his inten
tion of departing tho following morning.
Early on that day the theater intend-
ant acquainted hia grand ducal master
with what, bad happened. The conver
sation took' place in the garden of the
schloaa, situated on the road to the sta
tion, and suddenly an open carriage
with the actor in it hove in right.
“ Be quick I” said the prince. “ Get
me that box on my writing table. If go
be must, we’ll at any rate try to satisfy
him in hia ambition.” The intendant
ran, and returned just aa the vehicle
passed the gates “ One moment, Herr
U------. ” shouted the prince. “ Hert ia
something to remember me by. ”
Tho actor bowed low, and want hia
way. In another moment, however, hia
conveyance reappeared at tho gutea
“ There' ere two crosses, your highuess, ”
he exclaimed.
“ Never m ind,” replied the prince.
“ Give tho other to the coachman. ”

The expert in handwriting had made
a number of very interesting and con
vincing demonstrations with a piece of
chalk on the blackboard. He would
flourish a few lines and then stand back
and describe them, and the jury waa
profoundly impressed.
"This,” he said, holding a piece of

much in the babit of dictating all cor
respondence that hia handwriting failed
to settle into any permanent stylo or
bad drifted into unsteadiness through
lack of practice« ”
The testimony did not have any par
ticular bearing on the ease, but the Jury
looked at one another, and the specta
tors nodded their heads significantly.
“The weakness of the upward strokes

writing of one wbo ia not accustomed

“ May the court please,’’ exclaimed a
man wbo had been on the witness stand
a abort time before and who had beta

The expert paused and everybody
turned to look at the man who bad
made the interruption.
"May it please the court,” he repeat
ed, with much embarrassment, “ there

“ Of oonreek" said the expert, “ that
is what I am here for. ”
“ Well, the paper he has been talking
