I lu evidence of this position an exai. %,
. cited is that of a man in Baltimore wno
send« the whole water supply of his
linns« thiongh a large filter and subsi-
: duently puts bis drinking water through
1 onu of the small domestic filters com-
: won in the market.
A test of this arrangement showed
that on a day when the city taps were
running 510 bacteria to the cubic cen
timeter the large filter was delivering
some 9.000 bacteria in the same water.
When the large filter was repacked,
only 9 bacteria per centimeter got
through it. though this same water
when passed through the small filter
came out with 71 bacteria per centi
meter.
Thia aspect of the matter is still fur
ther strengthened by another example,
a case where a filter supposed to be the
i best in the market was in nse. The
effcctivcnpRa of thia filter waa so short
lived that the precaution was observed
of boiling the water after it was filtered.
