rws. “EXCELSIOR” TO THE SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 23, 1870. Newspaper Laws. Tbe following is taken from one of our ex changes. We commend h to tbe attention ot . those interested: Many persons seem to suppose themselves released from all obligation to publishers if they have ceased to take papers from tbe post office or other place to which they have been sent, others entertaining tbe opinion that if they never authorized the paper sent they may take it out «»f the office one, two or three years, and be relieved from paying for it upon the assumption that they never sub scribed. Such is not tbe case ; the law ex pressly states otherwise. Auy person taking a paper from the post office, or other means ot delivery, becomes responsible and cannot release himself except by paying for it and ordering it discontinued. Neither can a par ty who is io arrearages order his paper stop ped until they are paid. The law says that publishers may continue to send such paper till all charges are paid. Persons removing from a place and^eaving their papers uncalled for, and without giving notice of their re moval, are deemed guilty of fraud, so decided by the courts. No person is excused from his obligation to a newspaper unless he pays up tbe full amount of his indebtedness and properly orders it stopped, unless he be irre sponsible. The law goes this far to protect publisher* because it is not possible for them to know whether their papers are taken from the office, or that persons have removed and left them uncalled for. To an individual sub scriber this may seem a trifling matter, but to the publ shers is a verv grave one. Sup pose that fifty or a hundred cases should oc cur in one year, it would be serious to the publisher. B sautiful .—The following is one of Mr. Prentice’s littie waifs, so many of which ap peared in tbe Louisville Journal in its palmi est days: Sometime—it is a sweet, sweet song, war bled to and from among the topmost boughs of the heart, and filling tbe whole air with such joy and gladness as the songs of birds do when the summer morning comes out of darkness, and day is born on the mountains. We have all of our possessions in the future, which we call ‘‘sometime.” Beautiful flow ers and singing birds are there, onlv our hands seldom grasp the one, or our ears hear tbe other. But, oh reader, be of good cheer, for all the good is a golden “sometime,” when tbe hills and valleys of time are all passed ; when the wear and fever, the dis appointment and the sorrow of life are over, then there is the place and the rest appointed of God. Oh, homestead, over whose roof falls no shadows or even clouds, and over whose threshold the voice of sorrow is never beard, built upon the eternal hills and stand ing with thy spires and pinnacle* of celestial beauty among the palm trees of the citv on high, those who love God shall rest under thy shadow8, where there is no more sorrow nor pain, nor the sound of weeping “some time.” That greatly decried institution, the moth er-in-law, has at last found an apologist judge Payton, of Pennsylvania. In a re cent divorce he said : “As to much abused mothers in law I have a word to sav. I bold them in high respect, and yet, from ob servation, I have arrived at the conclusion that young married people had better live alone. There are good mothers-in-law— ▼ery good ones—and yet, with tbe best of them there might he trouble.” LIVERY STABLE. «I H ».£ 53 ® co Pd D 0 W "Z Sì ® — s — >—I • "^5 u X 3 —* rw ® < X — MM Ç I* « rt Z »—< c .g, s ? a * 12 1-2. & 0 g o o « J a a a T o X c ? s Ü CJ o ® ® O c ® a a S o ® ® *— C 3 s F F . a> «8 £• t£ —’ O ® ® h it 05 ® X) t C Ed TJ ’ <1 3 S -s ’® GJ 3 *■* 3 ~ X aa «23 « 4> ^•3 >■» b ® i-i J3 w S K ® § NOW, READER, self-abuse, venereal diseases badly cured, and sexual excesses, are all capable of producing a weakness of the generative organs, The organs of generation, when in perfect health. MAKE THE MAN. DID YOU ETTER THINK that those bold, defiant, energetic, persevering successful business men. are always those whose generative organs are in perfect health ? You never hear such uien complain of being melancholy, of nervousness, or palpitation of the heart. They are never Hfraid they cannot succeed in business ; they don’t become sad and discour aged ; they are always polite and pleasant in the company of ladies, and look you and them right in the face—none of your downcast looks or other meanness about them. I do not mean those who keep the organs inflated by running to excess. These will not only RUIN THEIR CONSTITUTIONS, but also those they do business with or for. How many men, from badly cured diseases, from the effects of self-abuse and excesses.., have brought about that state of weakness in those or gans that has reduced the general system so much It permeates tbe system, into which it becomes as to induce almost every other disease. thoroughly absorbed, and thus it strikes at the root of evil in both Rheumatism and Paralysis. The potency of its effects as a drug is exemplified in its singular operations on cattle, by which, when taken, it causes abortion in those animals that are with young when the nut is eaten. Squirrels, as if aware of its medicinal pro perties, eat but half of it, leaving the other half untasted. So wonderful is the efficacy of this production of nature, in cases of Rheumatism, that many of the old settlers and early Californians subject to the disease, carry the nut about their persons, not only is the great Diurectic, and is a certain cure for diseases of tho Bladder, Kidneys, Gravel, Dropsy, as an antidote, but as a preventive.
