LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Proceedings of the Board of Trustees.
Mr. Dowell ia an exceedingly versatile genius,
whether you see him toiling up Mount Parnassus,
or diving into the Pierian Spring in search of ‘pa
triotic poems ;” in the regions of History compil
ing his “ chronological record ;’* in the inner pen
etralia of Theology valiantly making war on the
Pope ; in the intricate labyrinth of National Fi-
nance, gravely and with his accustomed perspi
cacity, solving the deep problems of the relative
value of greenbucks and gold ; or, in the Temple
of Justice, criticising the judgments of the Su
preme Court of the United States. Everywhere
he is at home ; and the effulgent beam of his lu
minous intellect irradia cs all questions with a
flood of light, an<l solves the must intricate ques
tions with the speed of thought. We were deeply
impres-eu with the truth of iho thought above set
forth while reading his last letters in the Sintiinl
In his “rag money letter” he conclusively prove i
gold to be the only true currency, and in his other
letter he demonstrat 'd that the issue o» $45,000,-
tOV more uf paper money was ••eminently a wise
and just measuie.’’ In his lest letter he also in
flicted a mortal b.uw on tli^hl\>pe, and criticised
Chief Justice Chase so severely fur Ins decision on,
the green ack case, that doubtless the Chief Jus
lice will immediately resign from chagrin as soon
as he earns what Mr. Dowell thinks ot him und
bis decision.
