There Is another aspect of the ease

and that is tbe vibration. A steam
engine may be balanced for th«» recip
rocating weights, but it cannot be bal
anced against variations in the turn
ing moment, and therefore any ship
using it will be subject to vibrations
against which the steam turbine is
perfectly fre. Another thing-the lat
ter drives a smaller screw, ami tin- Im
mersion can tie mad»* »l«*ep enough to
lessen the throb of th»* propeller ma
terially. so that vibration from that
cause may in large part be eliminated.
The vibration is of small moment in a
freight ship, and it is not of primary
iui|M>rtanc<> even in a passenger ship,
but it may become very serious in
battleships if It interfeivs with sight
