TALKS ON THE RAILROAD SITUATION
New York, Sept. 13—J. C. Stubbs
vice-president of the Union Pacific
and Southern Pacific and chief d -
rector of all tiarrimad lines, wl o
was summoned to this city by the
alaiming illness of Mr Harriman,
talked freely on conditions in the
far northwest on the day of Mr.
Harriman's death.
With reference to occujiancy of
the Deschutes Canyon, Mr. Stubbs
says:
"As I understand it, the report
that there is room tor I nt one rail
road in die upper half ot the canyon
is false. I believe there is sufficient
room for half a dozen lines there,
and we are building into Central
O'egon without delav.
"Of the projected low-grade
cut off between Weed, Cal., and
Eugene, Ore, the section to
Klamath Falls has been competed

“1 am a little skeptical about the
financial value of this territory. In
cluding the Portland Seattle con
nection, when the traffic is divided
among two or three roads. It seems
to me that there is not much in it,
save for the line which is first in
the field, in a case where later lines
are compelled to use its tracks.
Ho.'.ever, that is a point which the
future alone can determine. 1 do
not believe that the Hill plans call
for an extension south of Coos
Bay. As for the Hill roads entering
San Francisco, I do not believe that
will come to pass in our day.”
Mr. Stubbs was particular in con
nection w ith these statements to have
it understood that as to new liner
..nd construction he might not be
fully informed, as these are not
under his supervision and he there
fore ¿as able to express only his
personal views based upon such
knowledge as he had gained.

a display of the resources along the
road and many other matters of im-
portanee in connection with the

The sale of stock for the new
road is progiessing very rapidly,
md the demand is far greater than
the fondest anticipations of the pro
motors. Messrs Lucas and Hop
son who have the fiscal agency foi
the road, stated that the financing
01 the road would be an easy prop
ositicn and that it was only a mat
ter of a short time until all the stock
would be taken.

Obituary.
I.innie Holman was born at Me
Minnville, Ore , March 27, 1873
and died in Bandon, Or<gon, Sep
lember 14, L 09, being 36 years,
5 months and 17 days old
She was married October 29,
1890 to A. J, Counts, to this union
four children were born, all of whom
together with the husband and
fither survive her.
She is also survived l>v her par
ents Mr. and Mis. W. P Holman,
four brothers and one sister
Mrs. Counts was a kind and lov
ing w ife and mother and was highly
respected by a large circle of
friends.

Gets Life Diploma
Supt. H. C. Ostien of the Ban
don schools has recently received
notice from State Supt. Ackerman
to the effect that he has been granted
a life statb teacher’s diploma for
Oregon.
Prof. Ostien finished
writing for a state diploma at the re
cent examination. Miss Josephine
Griffin of North Bend, also received
a similar diploma. These are the
only two reported for Coos county
this year.
