Coquille Jetty is Complete
Work on the Coquille Rive |ettv
h s been completed.
The contrac
tors have delivered the last ton
of rock and the engineers have of
ficially announced that the project
has been completed.
The jetty is
,170 feet long and the first work w , t -
done in 1881. At that time there
was <>nlv four feet <>f water on the
bar; now there is I 2 feet of watet
there.
During the life of the last con-
tract there was delivered and placet!
on the north jetty 31,000 tons of
stone. The work was under the di
rect supervision of Colonel Roessl« t
during the last part of the contract.
Coquille river bar is now in good
shape. There is plenty of water for
the light-draft boats.
Private sub
scription has done much to aid
the engineers, and further improve
inents are under way. A sea walj
will be built on the south side well
inside the river. It is believed that
this will force the current against the
jetty and increase the scour.—Ore

Resists Paying Taxes
Notice
Portland, Sept. 12— Contending
that the action of the County Board
of Equalization in upholding th<
$229/00 tax assessment
of its
money, notes and accounts was il
legal, the (). R. X N. Company,
through its attorney, will file suit fn
the State Circuit Court today to have
that decision set aside.
The com
pany will endeavor to have the tax
reduced to $9000, it being admitted
that at the time of the assessment the
company had $800,000 of taxable
property. Should the case go against
the railroad company, it will lie
compelled to pay not only the
$229,000 taxes, but $30,000 addi
tional as penalty, and the interest
which has accrued during the months
it had remained upaid.
Assessor
Sigler valued the money, notes and
accounts of the company at $16,800,-
000.
After the Board of Equalization
had listened to testimony to the ef
fect that this large surplus was not
taxable because it belonged to the
Union Pacific Compan.y instead of
the O. R. X’ N., .md was being ex
pended in building new roads, it
confirmed Mr. |Sigler's assessment.
