Tom Root, who lives «cross the river, brought to this office this week a chunk of greenish colored clay that smells as though it had been soaked in a barrt 1 of coal oil for a month, but he declared that it had been freshly dug from the earth and that the place where it was dug smelled so strongly like crude petroleum that it was a snow ing of force of mind over matter to keep a person's olfactory nerves in the near vicinity. It is possible that the stuff is not saturated with oil, but it smells enough like it to be so, and its general character would seem to warrant a thorough scientific test. If it is oil, it is but another evidence that coal, oil and gas underlie this vicinage in a man ner that will warrant thorough in vestigation. Frank B. The Gold Output The Manufacturers’ Record is circulating a postal card on the back of which is printed some in teresting facts about the production of gold, past and present; together with some conclusions as to its effect upon the manufacture, trade and labor of the world. We can do no better than to present the facts as they are compiled. "During the first half of the Nine teenth Century the total production of gold, was $787,000,000, while during the second half it amounted to $900,000,000. For the first time in the history of the world the pro duction of gold exceeded $200,- 000,000 in 1896, while in 1903 the output was above $350,000,000, and in 1907 it was $412,000,000. In other words, two year’s produc tion now will largely exceed the total production of the first half of the Nineteenth Century. The pro duction of the twelve years from 1896 to 1907, both inclusive, was over $,730,000,000, or considerably more than the total production of the world from 1492 to 1895, a little over 400 years, was $8,700,000,- 000. In the last twelve years the world has produced 45 per cent as much gold as it did in the pre- Dewitt’s Carbolized Witch Hazel is recommended as the best thing to use for piles.
