“Is not April 30, the date of
Washington’s inauguration as the
first president of a new nation,
more symbolical of his life than
Feb. 8?? The birth of the United
States—each year it passes with
out notice. The Declaration of In
dependence was fine, but it did not
assure the launching of the ship of
state Washington had much to do
with the launching of that ship,
and it is fitting that he should be
remembered chiefly in connection
therewith. Feb. 82, forsooth! We
might as well celebrate th* chop
ping down of th* cherry tree.
‘T'here are many men whose an
niversaries might well fall on July
4. It was on tnat day that Thomas
Jefferson signed the Declaration of
Independence, which he had drawn
up. But since there are many who
had a share in that proceeding and
in bringing that day to pass it is
better that July 4 should remain
a national anniversary and not the
day of any one man.
i “I submit a revised list of anni
versaries :
“Benjamin Franklin, Nov. 80.
On that day in the year 1782 he
signed the treaty of peace between
American colonies and England at
Paris.
“Thomas Jefferson, April 28. On
that day in the year 1803 he bought
the Louisiana territory from Napo
leon Bonaparte for the sum of «15,-
000,000.
“Abraham Lincoln, April 9. On
that day in the year 1865 Lee sur
rendered at Appomattox, this being
the thing which Lincoln spent the
best part of his life bringing to
pass. It meant the preservation of
the Union.
• “Jefferson Davis, Feb. 22. On
this day in the year 1802 he was in
augurated president of the Confed
eracy.
1 “Robert E. Lee, May 4. It was
on thia day that the battle of Chan-
cellorsville was won.

Mary and the Kitten.
Little Mary was playing with her
pet kitten. The kitten scratched her,
and she exclaimed, “You isadarned
old kitty!’’ Her mother told her that
she must not utter such a naughty
word again; and to be sure to im
press it on her mind, washed her
mouth out with soap and water.
The next day Mary was again
playing with the kitten, and again
trouble arose, when she was heard
to remark:
“You is just the same kind o
a kitten you was yesterday. ”
