Monday morning was the coldest
experienced this season.
The
ground was slightly frozen, and a
white frost reminded us that Santa
Claus was not far away.
Doctors Tyler, Mann and Gran
ville have all been in consultation
over the case of Fred D. Stewart,
who contracted Pneumonia, compli
cated with other features, from re
cent exposures, and now lies dan
gerously ill, at his home in Port
Orford, but with favorable symp-
toms as we go to press.
Quite a number of burnt piling
have come ashore at Port Orford,
also some lumber supposed to have
drifted up from Humboldt Bay, from
the Sotoyome, which caught lire at
sea and drifted ashore at that place.
Some idea of the severity of
Thursday’s gale may be gleaned
from the fact that nineteen trees fell
across a mile and a half of toad
south of Hubbard’s creek. Two
gangs of men were two days clear
ing the roads in this district.
The heavy surf of last week
closed up the outlet to the lake here,
and ran over the sand ridge into I he
lake for a mile
A lot of steel
heads were thus cut off from enter
ing the lake and the boys have had
exciting sport catching some of
them.
Thomas Hughes is circulating a
tetition to the County Court, to
abandon the proposed new road from
Sixes to Denmark, and asking that
the old road be improved.
The
|>etition is being signed by nearly
everybody.
The matter will come
up at the January term, and will re
quire a stiffening of backbones to
decide:
Annual Meeting.
The annual meeting of the stock
holders of the Prosper Canning
Company was held the 20th and a
board of directors elected, as fol
low's: R. W. Bullard, C. Hermann
and Samuel Nass. The board of
directors met and elected the follow
ing officers: R. W. Bullard, presi
dent; Mrs. S. W. Fahey, secretary
and Samuel Nass, manager. The
reports of the officers showed the
company to be in excellent financial
condition.

Panther Scare* Folk.
A huge panther is said to have
made its lair near the pumping sta
tion and in the last two weeks it
has been seen six different times bv
the residents of that district. It is
causing considerable alarm among
the women anil children, anti one of I
the former, who was in Marshfield
recently, asked that notice be made
of this fact and that the animal be
hun'ed and shot if possible.
The animal has been seen in the
some spot near the pumping station
each time, and any of the residents
of that section can give information
as to the exact location to any
ambitious nimrods in the city.—
