MnreMnM Notes.
From the New».
Word has been received by the
local agent of the steamer Break
water, that while lying at her dock
in Portland, that that structure had
taken fire and was considerably dam
aged bv the flames.
The Break
water pulled out in the stream with
slight damage.
A school for the colored and mixed
blood children has been established
in West Marshfield with Miss Pen
nock as teacher. The school au-
thorities shoultl see that these chil-
dren now attend the school regularly
and not be absent one-half, of the
time as was the case w ith the last
school provided for their lienefit.
G. W. Shelly, mayor of Prosper,
Ore., and traveling representative of
the Wm. Cluff Company, grocers,
San Francisco, is in the city calling
on his trade, says the Astoria Asto-
rian of Oct. iXth. Some time ago
Mr. Shelly became interested at
Prosper, Oregon, four miles from
Bandon, on the Coquille River, and
purchased a piece of land which he
plated and is meeting with splendid
success, having sold over ioo lots.
This is a sawmill town and he has
just helped to incorporate a new
company which will operate under
the name of the Spencer, Shelly
Lumber Co. Work on the mill has
already began and will be rushed
through. It will have a cutting ca
pacity of 60,000 feet per day, and
be modern in every respect. A box
factory will also be started, and they
are now on the lookout for a prac
tical boxmaker to take charge of the
plant. He reports things very pros
pering on the Coquille, and thinks
that Prosper will make one of the
best cities ot the coast, and if any
one can do it, Shelly can, as when it
comes to “peddling the hot" we
take off our hat to him for he's an
artist. However, he is deserving of
all the good luck that is coming his
way.

which they would have doubtless
succeeded in doing, had not ye

though it was a wild runaway, it was
a most fortunate one.
Tobacco Gone Up.
All kinds of it, choice imported
Havanas, 50-cent straights, two for
twenty-live, pi|>e mixtures and even
the lowly stogie have gone Hying
skyward at the mandate of the
tobacco trust. The balloon races in
price of luxuries are on.
Commencing with this week, all
the Portland tobacconists put the
new schedule into effect. Havana
cigars were the hardest hit and
smokers of the choice imported sort
will either have to rearrange their
taste or their pocket books.
Cigars that have been selling since
the memory of man and the tobacco
trust at two for a quarter, will here
after be 15 cents straight. And the
scorned 10-cent varieties have
wormed their way up into 'igh
society at a two for a quarter rate.
There is a general advance of at
least Ji a box on all gt ods—in some
cases the increase is larger—the es
pecially tine cigars bringing several
dollars a box more than formerly.
Even the chewers are hard hit in
the pull movement.
Wholesalers
have advanced the prices on all plug
and fine cut tobaccos to the retailers,
and the latter are preparing to get
even by taking the increase out of
the consumers.
Smoking tobaccos of all kinds
have also Liken a cloudward tack
and the pipe smokers are up against
the same proposition as their brother
smokers.
When it comes to explaining the
sharpest advance known in the his
tory of the tobacco business, numer
ous opinions are ventured, all of
which strike tobacco, users as friv
olous.
Excuse No. 1, is, of course,
short crop, and is checked off with
out comment.
Excuse No. 2, is, that the fillers
have forced an increase in wages of
1 cent a cigar.
Excuse No. 3, is, that all kinds of
lalvor in the tobacco fields, ware
houses, and cigar factories, have
gone up.
