week, Mrs. Win Hite brought us a
l>ox of strawberries that were the
best ever.
Great big fellows, one
of them measuring six inches in
circumference, and that is going
some for this time of the year any
where.
There is only one thing
for the wintry Minnesotians to do,
and that is to get a time table and
see how long before they can start
to Coos County, and incidentally
to Bandon where everything from
strawberries to tall pines grow and
flourish.

last issue of the Hillsboro Indepen
dent, which not only improves its
appearance greatly, but gives the
advancement of the paper one step
nearer modern journalism. Our as
sociations with that newspaper for
three years recalls to mind when the
present proprietor, D. ’W. Bath,
took charge of the paper, March 23,
1904, when it was a poor excuse for
a newspaper, on its last legs, and
struggling for existence. The many
new additions, Ixit h machinery and
material, with the untiring efforts to
make it the home paper of Washing
ton County, has placed it where it is
now, not only the largest paper, but
probably the l»est paying plant in
the County, with a subscription list
that might well Ire envied in a much
larger city.

many names of streets as there are
blocks. Columbia avenue has two
other names which it is known by.
We have three Broadways, and for
the life of most of us, we could not
tell where one of them was. Even
First Street is attached to three
streets, so we are informed. Verily,
the day of transformation of the
streets in Bandon should not be far
distant, and as an improvement, not
temporary, but permanent, will
stand for much after this and several
other councils have been forgotten.

5-ACRE TRACTS
E ven T he B est of us are vain
enough to be pleased to note a kind
ly and appreciative word on the
merits of our labors, and we are
going to mention part of a letter
from F. A. Mason, a jeweler of As
toria, who was formerly a newspaper
man connected with the Rockford
Morning Star of Rockford, III. He
says:
I received two copies of your
paper to-day, and am pleased
with the appearance of the paper
in every way. I am therefore
enclosing a Money Order for
#1.50 for a year’s subscription
to your paper, and hope to have
the pleasure of meeting you in
person in the near future, as I
am deeply interested in your
town and its future.
I am an old newspaper man,
and was at one time the City
Editor of the Rockford Morn
ing Star, of Rockford, III. Al
though I have not kept at that
line of business, still, I have
always taken a great interest in
the newspaper business and am
a firm believer in advertising as
a road to wealth.
Years of experience has taught
him his idea of advertising and its
practical end. Judiciously applied,
it is the boon of the small merchant
as well as the larger, who wishes to
increase. A stated amount applied
out of the net earnings used in ad
vertising will raise the receipts of any
business, and as the amount taken
in increases, the expenditures for ad
vertising should also be increased.
There are today men that base the
foundation of their great fortunes
upon advertising: men who started
at the lowest rung oi the ladder of
fame without any liacking or capital;
men who have amassed large for
tunes through the judicious medium
of advertising. The same oppor
tunities have presented themselves to
many who have failed to grasp them
by starting small, increasing their
business with judicious advertising
as the backbone of the institution.
