Tillman Scored.
Senator Tillman gave his tirade
on the negro question at the Des
Moines Chautauqua a week ago Sun
day aft ernoon. It was as outrage
ous a performance as ever occurred
in the state of Iowa. Tillman’s
statement that the negro is not and
never can be equal to the white
man may be his honest opinion.
As long as lie discusses the question
temperately and confines himself to
facts he is entitled to respectful
hearing
But when he transgresses
all I hiuik I s of decency, advises l«w
breaking and justifies murder and
mob rule, he forfeits all right to be
heard by decent people Among
other things he said in his I »es
Moines tirade was that the citizens
of the North amalgamated with the
negro to the full extent of their
opportunities, and that the track of
of the route of Sherman’s march to
the sea could be traced on after
years by the mulatoes born after the
soldier*. passed that way.
Who is this man Tillman who
talks about ‘‘amalgamating” with
negroes? Who is he who black
guards Union soldiers for alleged
association with coloreii women?
If of the slaveholding family of South
Carolina, the probability is that he
has, or has had, if his father did no

safe to say that cohabited with dirty

and in a civilized community he
would have been indicted and pun
ished as accessory to the crime.
This is not the worst feature of the
case, nor is it the deepest disgrace
connected with it. It is found in
the fact that in the city of Des
Moines, the capital city of Iowa, an
audience was found on a Sunday
afternoon to sit and listen to this
red handed, vituperative blackguard
for two hours, and if the public
prints are to be believed, to inter
rupt him with applause. And at
the close enough people were found
