Counterfeit Coins Passed.
Demand For Technical Men.' “
and the results oiex
perience.
Counterfeit money is making its
appearance on Coos Bay and there
is much excitement among the dif
ferent firms that found themselves in
possession of the spurious coins.
The North Bend News Company of
North Bend was the first iirm known
to have been victimized.
The first intimation received in
Marshfield was in the shape of a
warning to Robert Marsden, pro
prietor of the billiard parlor on Front
street. After being informed, Mr.
Marsden was on the lookout for the
coins ami on Saturday night one
answering the description was hand
ed in. The gentleman passing the
coin was entirely innocent that lie
was in possession of a counterfeit
coin and was nonplussed on being
informed oi its real character.
The North Bend New-. Company
of North Bend hi. discovered five
of the coins 111 its till. l'he money is
in every case five dollar gold pieces
dated 1903 ami said to be an ex-
cellent imitation.
Coquille Notes.
l'roni the Sentinel.
And still another large sawmill
for the Coquille river is assured.
'Die present flurry in the lumber
market has not disturbed the confi
dence of lumber manufacturers in
the future of Coos County timber.
F. A. Spencer, H. E. and G. \V.
Shelley are incorporating for $50,-
ojo for the purpose of building a
mill on the new Prosper tow nsite
which was laid out recently near
the present Prosper Mill Co.’s plant.
The name assumed is the Spen
cer- Shelley Lumber company and
their articles of incorporation will
permit them to engage in sawmill
ing, logging and owning and oper
ating their own line of lumber
carrying vessels. The stock will be
fully paid up as soon as the organ
ization is complete, and a site was
reserved for mill and booin purposes
when the town was platted.
Mr. G. W. Shelley, the well
known traveling man, is the man-
ager of the business at this end of
the line. He left last Saturday on
his way to Washington to confer
with the other members of the com
pany.
Mr. Spencer is a practical saw
mill man as well as others of the new
company; so the undertaking will
not be an experiment, but will be
conducted by men who understand
their business in all its phases.
In view of the general impression
that the professions are greatly over
crowded, it is surprising to learn
that some of the leading railroads
of flic country are finding much
difficulty in securing properly qual
ilied young men to till subordinate
( ositions on the engineering staff.
< »11c road in particular has recently
gone so far as to make the fact
known in thepublic press, and to
invite communications from young
men who have passed through tech
nical schools, and possess the necess-
ry qualification« to enable them to
< ommence work as rodmen and
haitiinen, or do the simpler instru-
mental work connected with the
construction and maintenance of
the railroad, It was further stated
laat the remuneration would In
sufficient to enable these men to
in
maintain themselves at once
decency and comfort, and that for
those who showed aptitude and ap
plication there was a reasonabG ex
pectation of early promotion. 1 ur-
¡her evidence of the excellent open
ag afforded by the present indus
trial activity is found in the fact that,
in one of the technical colleges of the
■ountry, every member of the grad
nation class of 1906 had secured an
ippointment some month’ before
the close of the college year. The
demand for technically-qualified men
in railroad work has unquestionably
been stimulated by the recognition
of the fact that the increase in the
capacity and weight of the motive
power and rollingstock, and the de
mand for more intelligent supervis
ion due to the introduction of electric
tradition on steam roads, is render
ing it desirable that not only the en
gineering department, but also those
which haveto do with the main
tenance and operation <[ the road
should be rim by men with sufficient
technical knowledge, and sufficient
training in natural science, to enable
them to exercise a more intelligent
oversight of their department than is
possible in the case of men whose
theoretical know ledge is .bounded by
the limits of a common school
education. — Scientific American.
